I have read several articles about this particular surgery curing type two. Even read about it in diabetes Forecast. Anyone have this happen to them? Would love your stories. Thanks!

You need to learn about the DS surgery relative to curing diabetes.

I'm no expert, but most of the surgeries seem to resolve diabetes after weight is lost.  The DS often resolves the diabetes IMMEDIATELY.

You can visit the DS board, but I'll ask some smart people to come talk to you.

DS has a better remission rate for diabetes (98%), but RNY (80% remission rate) also resolves diabetes immediately. It's not dependent on weight loss.

My blood sugar was normal immediately after surgery, my A1C has dropped from 6.0 to 4.5, and I haven't needed any meds since then.

Same here, walked out of the hospital off my diabetes meds and still normal 6 years later after my rny.

So resolution of diabetes with wls does NOT occur with the band...and the sleeve...unless and until weight loss occurs?

Yes, from the research I've read, that seems to be right. The International Diabetes Federation
released a position paper last week that recognizes WLS as a treatment for MO patients with
diabetes.

Well, I'm living proof of the DS "curing" type two.
I was taking over 200 units of insulin and 5 metformin a day. My kidneys were packing it in and my liver was starting to show signs of damage.

I had my DS with darling Dr. L on Oct 1 2008. I had my last unit of insulin and I mean 1 unit on Oct. 4 2008. Since that day I have a blood sugar H1C of 4.2, a cholesterol ratio of 2.2 and both my kidneys and liver like me again! I do now have low vitamin D and low iron. But taking supplements for the rest of my life is a very small price to pay.

The DS really saved my life. I am no expert but this is what happened to me, read into it what you will. But I bet you will find many others with similar stories.

My type II diabetes resolved before I even left the hospital.  I am now completely insulin free and my blood sugar has been beautiful.  I'm so grateful to have had this surgery!

I was on insulin and Metformin with reactive hypoglycemia and a high A1C. I had a revision to a DS on 12/15/10 . My last dose of insulin was 2 units IV on the 18th. My blood sugars are normal, all 90 or less and I am off all DM meds and BP meds.

The DS has saved my life!!!!!

The diabetes is believed to be resolved by the diversion of the duodenum.  That is exactly the same with DS and with RNY.  With RNY most people are off diabetes medications immediately after surgery.  There is no guarantee with either procedure, but is the best shot out there now of "curing" Type 2 diabetes.
