"who underwent gastric bypass surgery and regained weight were highly likely to have reactive hypoglycemia, a condition in which blood glucose drops below the normal level, one to two hours after ingesting a meal high in carbs."

"...
they would rapidly become hungry and feel light headed, especially after consuming simple carbohydrates, which stimulate insulin production..."

Beth:
I love you, I truly do...I know you have had a really rough time with RH, but I also have to be  dead honest...... Everything I have read on Late Dumping (also known as Reactive Hypoglycemia) or other problems are 95% due to people eating.......Carbohydrates.

I know you have a severe form, and yours might be different. YOu are probably in the 5%....But Even without the use of my pyloric valve....If all I am eating is PROTEIN and LESS than 25 grams of Carbs per DAY (not meal, but per day). I have never heard of anyone dumping, crashing or having RH...(Again, you may be different because you have seizures, and I honestly suspect you may have something else metabolic going on, or even problems with your pancreas or parathyroid (Graves Disease).

But protein does not cause one to crash or dump...Even the article you posted mentioned CARBS as the "bad guys". I am really not trying to start crap, I respect the article and it is right...IF I eat SIMPLE carbs or too many carbs I either late dump or have RH... I keep my carbs under 25 grams a DAY (not meal). I eat mainly, MEAT, meat and meat (like an atkins) and have no problems. Any carbs come only from fresh fruit or veggies (and even then a small amount...Steak, Lamb, goat, fish and chicken ALWAYS come first) well and legumes...I love me my Edamame and/or refried beans with tons of cheese, or as the DS'ers like BACON and eggs.

I just want to put the opinion out there that the average bear who dumps or had RH is eating way to many carbs (as per the article ) or SIMPLE carbs (Corn sugars, corn carbs, pasta rice, etc...) basically ANY grain, bread, noodle etc is a carb and a simple carb at that.

Just throwing my 2 cents out. Only because I hear so many folks, newbies and veterans talk about eating crackers, or whole wheat toast or what not....In my opinion if you are one of those who have RH or are carb sensitive (late dumping) stay far away from them...ANY refined carb (just as a diabetic must stay away from sugar and sucrose).

Again, Beth, I know you are a slightly different case, and you probably have something else going on...

((((((hugs))))))
Warmly,
Jackie

When I read the study it said to me that with the RNY the dietary changes are for a lifetime and staying low carb can stop regain due to RH.

In my case at 8 years out I had regain due to a steady diet of carbs, even wierd cravings/urges that I now know was RH and my body trying to keep my BS up.

When I started "back on track" this winter I ate very low carb and found I didn't have any cravings/urges at all.  If I add in too many carbs I find myself having to graze in order to feel normal.

It is one of the side effects of RNY & I deal with it.  (doesn't mean I like it)

well to me it is done and I have to deal with it, no sense of crying over spilled milk. All wls has some kind of side effects, If you think you are doom well you are doom, but for me I roll with the punches, like pupcake said I may not like it, but I have to deal with it. I take one day at a time that is all I can handle lol

great article, but before the doctors in Holland will acknowledge this, we will be a decade further along. They do not like the DS here for drastic reasons, they do not do much VSG yet.

So I went with RNy and indeed: no use crying over spilt milk. I would like to learn how I can BEST live with the choice I have made and how to make my chances of RH and regain as little as possible. So I guess keeping a low carb diet is my best shot?

I KNOW your sittuation is very extreme and in now way want to imply you could have prevented this.

I do wonder however, when i sometimes read your story: would you not benefit from a revision to DS or something alike? or am I being really stupid asking this?

love from WLS-backwards Holland
