OT- kids and tonsillectomies...

My DD had her tonsils and adenoids out today- she is 7... After waking up she was very hysterical and combative. She calmed down and we came home. Since being home she will NOT taker her pain meds (Tylenol with codeine) at all. We have tried mixing it in juice, melted popsicle, soda, chocolate syrup... Nothing makes it palatable, and it still makes her gag after a single sip. She will not drink or eat her popsicles anymore without a fight, and now she is trying to not even swallow her spit.

I know that dehydration can be a problem, and we are watching her urine output carefully and other signs.. But how long feasibly before she needs to go back to the hospital? Also, any suggestions for pain?

This has been a rough frigging day, and any advice would be appreciated. We are trying to not take her back because we know they will have to admt her... Ahhh. :')

As long as she is keeping cool and doesn't have a fever, I wouldn't worry about it unless it continues into tomorrow.

I don't suppose you know what anaesthesia she had?  My son has autism and we were given a choice when he had dental surgery at Denver Children's Hospital.  For various reasons we chose Ketamine and one of the side effects of that is being combative in recovery ...

I hope she's OK and if she's a normal, healthy child - I wouldn't worry too much!   I'll bet she wakes tomorrow demanding a grilled cheese or something!!!

I guess I now feel remiss, but I do not know what type of anesthesia she had- we definitely weren't given a choice. They did say that her reaction was common. It took three nurses and myself to hold her down and she still managed to rip her IV out.

I guess I will let her be until the morning and see how it goes. It is just SO hard to see your child hurting.. And I feel like I am expending so much effort on her that my other daughter feels left out and ignored. What a tightrope parenting is!

thanks for replying!

I feel for you, Fawn and don't feel remiss - thankfully Denver Children's has a specialist autism department and they are very mindful of how differently our children react compared to neurotypical children - hence the choice - It's not like I'm super parent or anything LOL!!!

They told us Ian would be very sleepy for hours whereas we were begging to take him home an hour after surgery as he was soooooooo hyperactive and we couldn't keep him on the bed - he was a bloody nightmare!!!

I hope she's ok tomorrow - they don't give us How-To Manuals when they give us those babies, do they?  Parenting is a crapshoot most of the time and we can only hope they survive having us as parents for the most part!  I'm sure you do a much better than average job - worrying about both is a sure sign of that!

Let us know how she is tomorrow?

Call the Doc.  Perhaps she can get tylenol suppositories, it would be a start.

My DD gets dehydrated easily and I know how hard it is to get them to drink.  Try freezer pops cut in half (and wrap with a paper towel so their hands don't get cold- mommy hugs)  Play tea party, bring out fun glasses (champagne- martini)  I wouldn't think you have to push fluids too hard today, they probably tanked her up in surgery.  The more you push the more she may fight since she feels so crappy.

Watch her carefully call the doc if you are worried

Can you try making her an icy? Take a tiny plastic cup or even one of those gargle cups ... fill it with juice or fruit punch .. freeze it without the meds (I am not sure how the meds are altered with temp) and when it is almost done with just a bit of  softness in the middle squeeze in the meds .... Keep her hydrated with ice chips if she is not drinking .... That is the only way I could get my KenKen to take any meds at all ... he was the most difficult kid with that ... and as an adult still is ...

Sorry I missed your thread ... you have your hands full.... If there is anything I can do to help please let me know.....

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it, and then even tried a slushee from sonic. She take either, with or without medicine. She is making me crazy.. Never had trouble with meds before. Her throat must be hurting so bad!

If she is not swallowing liquids or( her own spit) you need to call her doctor right away children dehydrate rather quickly and it wont get better if she doesn't swallow the first day they dont feels as bad but by the second and third day the pain gets worse so she will need some sort of pain med on board. hope she feels well soon
try crushing up a popsicle and mix it with a little 7up let her eat it with a spoon its real important she keeps swallowing

Thanks for responding. This has been another challenging day. Late last night we got her to at least take Tylenol meltaways, and she drank a good bit and slept some. Today is back to her refusing everything. We have decided that short of a huge change in her by morning, to the ER she goes.. Sigh.

You need to get her pain medication into her or she will not drink and this is very important!!  Do you have help?  I would wrap her in a sheet to secure her and have someone hug and hold her.  Then take a syringe (no needle!) with the medicine (don't mix it with anything as it just increases the volume you have to give) and insert it into  the pocket  in the side of her mouth (don't point it to the back of her mouth or she could gag or choke) and squirt in slowly so she doesn't choke.  She will fight, but eventully realize that you are serious.  Sometimes we have to be mean to be kind.  It is better than returning for an IV for rehydration....
