PSA: OOPs - Orange Oil Poops: It's Not Just ERNYers and DSers Who Get Them

This thread, both the original post and the over 100 posts in response is so funny (with one exception) I was laughing so hard I was crying uncontrollably trying to read some of them to my husband:
http://www.poopreport.com/Consumer/mystery_orange_oil.html

And this is another thread that's pretty funny too, but with some specific information about the problem: http://blog.medellitin.com/2008/12/escolar-world-most-danger ous-fish.html

Seriously though - apparently this fish is being served everywhere (except Japan, where it has been outlawed) either under its proper nam or substituted for other fish like Orange Roughy, sea bass or called white tuna or super white tuna.  BEWARE!

I'm enjoying the marriage advice, too!  plus I learned a lot: win-win!

once upon a time I had a group to talk about Binge Eating Disorder, and later one about Clean Eating.

PM me if you are interested in either of these.

I can't believe I read the responses through laughter tears streaming down my face,,,, some of those responses had me in stitches.  I need to warn DH always bringing in these weird fish from the fish market... no orange oil poop yet unless someone is keeping it a secret.... thanks for the warning though .... I better watch what kind of tuna I'm getting with my Sashimi...

Oh fergawdsakes.

Yes, we do.  All the time.  You definitely need to be getting a lapband instead.

For the rest of you, the orange oil poops (and other MINOR gastrointestinal mishaps) can happen in any malabsorptive surgery, especially early out when the guts are adapting.  It is almost without exception controllable by avoiding foods that trigger it, which may differ for different people, but usually involves too much fat for your tender guts and often tomatoes, frequently accompanied by too much white flour carbs - thus, spaghetti. lasagna and pizza are common triggers.

If you can't handle this MINOR issue, I truly suggest you get a less effective surgery that doesn't scare you so much.  Trying to live on a calorie-restricted diet for the rest of your life would be MUCH easier for you.

But seriously, if you want to see the results of non-compliance with malabsorption, check out this non-compliant ERNYer's issues: http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/amos/4424736/Diet-orange-o il-smell/

Geez!!!! I was asking a legitimate question. I obviously knew there were significant bowel changes with the DS, but no where did I ever read about anal leakage.  I took the weight loss pill Alli before and truly did have many close calls making it to the bathroom. The way I understood it, the DS did not cause bowel disturbance to that extent long term.  But then I read this post, and I thought maybe this really was a ongoing problem similar to what I experienced with Alli (and since I wear white scrub pants to work it's not a  "minor" issue for me to crap my pants).  I want to know exactly what I'm getting into instead of waking up from a surgery to find that I just had something done that I won't be able to live with the rest of my life.

I'll take you at your word - that you hadn't seen ANY previous posts about this on the DS board, despite your extensive research.  The tone of your post was trollish to me ear, and I responded sarcastically.

Yes, SOME DSers (and RNYers too) have orange oil in their poop, especially early out.  It is a GOOD sign of fat malabsorption to see orange oil in the toilet.  However - almost always dependent on dietary indiscretions - that oil can be copious enough to leak out.  It never happened to me, nor to most DSers, but it CAN happen.  I have a friend who had this happen (I think it was dietary, as he did not follow all the rules all the time, or even most of the rules), so it is not rare as hen's teeth, but if having to wear white pants for your job is enough to scare you into being compliant, at least on work days, I don't think that's a bad thing.

And early out, you might want to wear a pad, just in case, if you are really concerned - it couldn't hurt.  Once your guts settle down after a few months, you needn't worry (unless you are like that ditz of an ERNYer who didn't know what her surgery was, didn't have any idea of how to comply, oh wait - DID know how to comply but didn't WANT to, and chose to give up her job and sit home alone in an adult diaper soaked with a pool of orange oil, crapping herself while she ate whatever she wanted).

I can see how the wording of my post may have came off that way.  I have read many threads about post-op bowel habits, and like I said, I hadn't read anything where anyone said anything about having accidents..only that they went more frequently and had more urgency (both of which I'm fine with).  I was just concerned when I saw this that maybe people were having more bowel issues than I originally thought.  Like I said before, I'm willing to deal with a lot of things, but I certainly don't want to have long term issues with accidents that weren't able to be controled by following the program requirements. I appreciate your reply.  Thank you.
