Good Afternoon everyone,I've been on OH for a while but always been a lurker don't really post.I started this process back in 09 had a consultation with the surgeon did blood work but i stop the process because i felt like i could do it on my own....Here i am two year later and 14 pounds heavier.I did sign up with WW/Planet fitness  in march and i was doing everything that i was suppose too and i only have lost 12 pounds from march.I went to my PCP and had a whole work up done because i figured it had to be something internal,Everything came back perfect.,I don't know what it could be,The only thing that i can come up with is my body is now fighting really hard and its not letting go of the weight so now I'm ready to take the next step forward. Two years ago my INS only covered RNY/Lap Band...For my weight range lap band was out of the question and i know that RNY is a good surgery hell they all are but the whole factor or re-routing my inside scared.I know that each surgery have there own set of Pros's/Con's...Now i know that my INS have made changes and now they cover VSG and that's the surgery that i wanted from jump.I know that you see post like this asking which surgery to choose,I know that's a personal choice.I'm just coming to OH for support and to continue to look for as much information that i can continue to gather while i start this process all over again.Everyone here has been such an inspiration to me because it takes a lot to start and finish this process.Let me give some back ground info on myself I'm 26,My current weight is 470.4 BMi of 71.5 and I'm starting this journey all over again starting this process over again august 1 when i meet with the surgeon again...I've been doing Weigh****chers for the past 4 months because my INS requires a six month of documented Weight loss.Any tips or other websites that i can get info from would be greatly appreciated.

Surgery choice is usually recommended by the surgeon for reasons that your body has to deal with. If you have diatebes, gerd, like to eat a lot of fatty or high sugar foods, RNY  may be best for you. VSG involve removing a good part of the stomach, allows you to eat sugary foods, but does not resolve diabetes or gerd as good as RNY. Two sisters in one of my support groups had surgery--one had RNY and one had VSG.  The VSG surgery was first almost 2 years ago, with a wt loss of around 85 pounds. The RNY was done a year later, with a loss of over 100 pounds.  The RNY sister said her VSG sister had learned to cheat her surgery, eating whatever she wanted.  These surgeries are only tools.  and its your behavior modification that determines the final result.  Drinking a lot of water, remembering to faithfully take your daily supplements, eating healthy foods in smaller portions, avoiding a lot of bread--pasta--rice, stop drinking sodas, and daily exercise need to be part of your lifestyle change. I strongly suggest you attend a couple of support groups--a couple for RNY post ops and a couple for VSG post ops. It's at these meetings where you can ask questions of people who have actually had surgery, and you can listen to their group discussions on how they overcame their post op challenges. DAVE

Dave thank you so much for your respond.I really appreciate your input. When i met with my surgeon in 09 he felt that VSG would have been a good choice for me and before i met him i was tossing between RNY/VSG. I've done as much research as i possible could on both of them and i know that i want VSG,however i open to hearing about both sides.I just want to make sure that i made the best decision possible for me.I'm going to continue to do as much research as i can while i'm still in the start of the journey.I think that with any of these surgeries people have learned to "cheat". I'm not looking to cheat,Ive been working on my relationship with food for that past couple months and i know what my triggers are and i know the kind of eater i am..

From the sound of it, your metabolism may be shot. If you're dieting faithfully but not losing weight, it's not your lifestyle, its your metabolism. So food restriction may not solve your problem, some surgeries are only restricive in nature (like the VSG). You're restrcting your food intake now, and it's not helping.

I'd recommend looking into the DS as well as the RNY.

My metabolism was crap, yet my blood profile came out normal according to several endocrinologists, but I had a lot of the PCOS symptoms and could not loose weight while eating 1200-1400 cal per day plus 6 hours a week of instense exercise. I picked the DS because of it's good reputation to resolve metabolic weight loss obsticles, and also it's perk that you can enjoy a variety of foods, especially rich foods.

Good luck!

Thank you Busybee,That's what i was thinking as well that my metabolism may be shot to hell...I was hardcore from march until the first week of july and to only lose 10 pounds was very frustarting, granted i lost inches but for the amout of working out i was doing it should have been more.I'm not going to lie to you lately the last week or so i've jsut been eating what i wanted because i've seen that my hard work is not getting me anywhere,Granted i'm not going crazy and i'm still doing portion control its just that i'm not working out as hard as i use too..Thank you again for your input,When i met with the surgeon in august i'll see what he says.

I'm on a Everchanging journey.

No problem, I know how you feel. It's really hard to diet, and when it doesn't work despite all the efforst to do things "right" it is so discouraging, like a kick in the nuts!

Just a word of warning about discussing weight loss surgeries with bariatric surgeons: make sure the doctor you are seeing for a consultation is qualified to perform all the surgeries you want to speak with him/her about. So if you are going to talk to them about a RNY and the DS, make sure they perform both (you may have to do some homework on your own to make sure, they're not always honest about that). Otherwise the doc may "trash talk" and about the surgeries that they do not perform. This happens with the DS a lot, there are actually very few surgeons who can do it, and it hs been known that some surgons will try to steer you away from choosing surgeries that they cannot persoms. The only way to make sure the surgeon isn't biased against any surgery is to make sure they can do them all! If you're in the tri-state area Dr. Roslin comes to mind, there are a few others who are highly recommended who perform the DS and the RNY, so I'm sure many more people on the board will chime in with any recommendations.

Good luck!

Thank you Busybee,Dr Roslin was at the very top of my list. However Lenox hill doesn't take my insurance at hall...I found another surgeon who comes highly recommended as well,I met with him already back in 09 but i was scared so i didn't do it.Dr Herron was awesome when i met him and he didn't trash talk any of the surgeries. He talked about all of them and what he thought would work best for me.Once again thank you for everything i really appreciate you input.

I had RNY, but if I knew everything that I know now when I had started this journey I would of had DS!!!! I am not knocking my RNY...in fact..... I love it, but I know for long term weight loss DS is best!!
Just make sure you do your research and take your vitamins!!!

Hi! I'm glad you are posting and asking questions. I have done very well with RNY and love my life. However, knowing what I do now, I would have gone with the DS. I so love what I have, that I want to keep it. The DS is more a cure for diabetes and I love not doing insulin anymore. Good luck making your decision. I just did what my surgeon recommended instead of researching. I'm glad you're doing the research! Nice to meet you!      Connie
