Intervention - Brittney - Gastric Bypass - Alcoholism
Brittney is a post op. Brittney has a problem.
Welcome to the thousands of post ops with the same problem.
Here is where I interject my link: HAVE YOU READ WEIGHTY SECRETS?
People ARE addicts. People ARE Alcoholics. It IS real. There are entirely too much denial in our community about the reality of post weight loss surgery addiction. I see it EVERY F_CKING DAY. "Is it wrong that I watch Intervention while I drink a bottle of wine?"
Yes. Very. WHAT THE F_CK?
Brittney saw her food addiction transformed into a raging alcohol addiction after gastric bypass surgery. Now she stands to lose her family as they grow weary of her alcohol-fueled antics.
Thanks for posting. I will definitely be watching this on Monday. There is no denying that transfer additions occur. It makes total sense to me that WLS patients would go from being addicted to food to being addicted to something else. Are there actually people who don't believe that this happens? I think many of us (especially those of us with addictive personalities) will struggle with this problem in one way or another - with one vice or another... I think there should be mandatory counseling for a period of time following surgery. Perhaps some people don't need it, but I'm guessing that the majority of us could benefit from some psychological guidance during this time of adjustment.

I have a friend who had gastric and all she doesn is drink. She tries to fools us by moving food around but could finish a bottle of vodka in record time...so sad :(
Wow.. I need to watch this for sure.. And you are right.. Cross addictions are rampant in the community. I lost a friend (who I met on this site over 8 years ago) to liver failure caused by the abuse of alcohol and pills.. She never had that problem before WLS but used it to cope after WLS.. It is definintely part of the dark side of WLS..
And if y'all have not checked out Weighy Secrets - you should.. Some of the 'secrets' just blow my mind..

I think more time should be spent on addiction PRE-surgery. This is a pretty prevalent issue AFTER surgery that I see in my recovery circles.
People with addiction are sick - it's the only disease that we get mad at. It's the only disease that tells you that you don't have it (denial) and it's easy to transfer from one to the other because it's centered in the BRAIN. Hard wired. Can't help having the disease of addiction but you CAN do something about it.
Once you go from being a cucumber to a pickle, you can't go back to being a cucumber.
And if the hole in your soul doesn't get addressed BEFORE surgery, then you are more than likely to transfer addiction imho to something else. If not another substance, then a process addiction (like gambling, sex, shopping)
I hate this disease. We just buried yet another woman from alcohol poisoning. It was bad. Vomit on the walls, alone in a rented room kind of death. The people who owned the house lived IN the house didn't know she was dead for 2-3 days. It's a F***ing tragedy :(
Simply not acceptable when there is a solution. She was a beautiful spirit who didn't know her own worth.
Get help. You're worth it. It's worth the work, trust me. I'm clean. I'm sober. Thank God (or Universe...whatever it is- thanks)
Peace

I watch Intervetion all the time. I'm drawn to the show...I sit in anticipation through the entire hour just hoping there will be a good report that the person has been sober/free from their addiction for ______ months/days, etc...
With this one featuring a post wls subject, I will definitely tune in. Thanks for the heads-up.
