Fuming Foodie - WLS is the Easy Way Out Author - calls into BTV radio last night
There has been much discussion re: the article in the Miami New Times by "Fuming Foodie" Ily Goyanes.. In her blog submission she states that:
"if the fattest man on Earth can say no to food and yes to exercise, so can all of the self-indulgent, overweight, spineless jellyfish who take the easy way out."

BariatricTV.com invited Ms. Goyanes to dial into our radio show last night.. and she did. Below is a link to the recorded show and the discussion that occurred with the blog author.

In Episode 38 we were joined by McNee and Diva Taunia to discuss a recent article in the Miami New Times regarding weight loss surgery being the easy way out. To our surprise we were joined by Ily Goyanes, aka Fuming Foodie, who was the author of the article. What transpired was a fun and educational discussion around the subject of Weight Loss Surgery

Ok, I've listened to this lady go on for over 60 minutes, and honestly... that was way too much time to dedicate to her ignorance. Sometimes you can't convince people, and those people are just going to be prejudice against obese people like those who are prejudice against people of certain religions, skin tone, political beliefs, etc.
I'm glad you tried to talk to her about this, but she wasn't even willing to listen to what anyone had to say.

Yep.. I agree.. It was a bit frustrating
We did change her mind on a few things and got her to admit that her language was inflammatory.. but her stance on WLS being the easy way out? Yeah.. she's sticking to it.
Oh well.. baby steps. With education - hopefully - comes insight.
Will be interesting to see what she posts as her follow up.

I'm thankful that there are many tolerant people around me. She is a bigot and a clueless one at that. I tend to stay away from people like her and not let them waste my time or drain my energy. Thank you for being so tolerant and trying to educate her. My hat is off to you.

I listened too- at least it was a civil discussion..
She seems stuck in the same "obesity is a moral failing" that many ignorant people get wrapped up in. When you class obesity as some sort of moral failure it makes it very easy to go the opposite direction and say that the only way to be proud of yourself is to do it the "old fashioned way" with d & e, regardless of the fact that it's not effective on it's own for the vast majority. Considering she's overweight and diabetic, I would think she would be a little more open to education.
Who knows, she's in her late 30's.. maybe after a few more years of yo-yoing, juice fasts, and regain she may find herself looking at the subject with some new perspective.

It's the juice fasts that pushed me over the edge and goaded me into a response.

Congratulations on the way you handled the entire situation with grace and class. First, before Ms. Goyanes called in, your class was demonstrated by your refusal to sink to the level of name calling. However, I could not finish listening so I can only assume you handled yourselves with class until the bitter end. And I call it the bitter end because I did bail when it became painfully obvious that while Ms. Goyanes was not vicious, she was neither very open minded. That's OK, she is allowed her opinions just as we are allowed ours.
I have never encountered close mindedness as I sought to remedy my health. My sympathies to all of those have met their own Ms. Goyanes. I never doubted their stories, just had no experience with them. I applaud everyone who has heard that resistance and ignorant talk yet has gone ahead to do what is best for them. Still shaking my head over the concept of "elective" as she put it. In that case, coronary artery by-passes and organ transplants would be classified as elective. I guess it is all a choice: death or a new liver, death by obesity related conditions or WLS, etc. It just doesn't seem like much of one to so many of us.
