I live in Japan for 10and half years!!! Okinawa for 6 and the other 4and half main land!!!  So are you going to Misawa? All I can say is embrace it!!!!! I love Japan!!! My daughter inlaw is Japanese!!! I speak enough not to get lost and I can go shopping anywhere lol!!!  Have a blast and yes it get very cold there!!!! So living on base will be a good idea!!! Because the heating off base is diffrent!!!! Live off base as well!!! Enjoy your stay!!!!

Thanks!  I found a pair of thermal waterproof boots that are black and pink and rated for 30 degrees.  I am going to get them. Cost be darned!

Plus the colors r cute!!!  Also I have a really easy to read book to help me it call Survival Japanese How to communicatewithout Fuss or Fear- Instantly by Boye De Mente He has a quick guide which is yellow this one  is older. Then he has  revised edition and that one is blue!!!!! I also have making out in Japanese that one teaches you some bad words lol!!  My good friend got me that one she Japanese!!! She say that one is the best because then you can really learn the gooood stuff:)
