If you go to Manhatten bring $$$, I just came back yesterday from a two day birthday trip based in Times Square and its cost a small fortune.  Just remember if anyone wants to visit the 9/11 memorial you need to get tickets in advance, it was very moving but the number of security checkpoints is a little unnerving.  I love NYC and had a terrific time.

Oh, I know... we went last fall for the Obesity Action Coalition -- I spent the majority of my spending money on coffee.  I try not to spend much during events.  Hoping to get at least half a day in town.

It really is fun, just don't eat in Times Square, unless you go to a hotdog vendor it will cost 20 dollars for just about anything else.  Its really insane.  We were told to go eat on 9th but never did, I wish we could of stayed longer, I wanted to see a play for my birthday and got to see Phantom of the Opera for the first time, It was terrific.

I hope you have fun and get better weather then I did, it was so muggy and miserable, I am peri menopausal and for the first time in my life the heat drives me nuts, I feel like my thermometer is broken and I am set for hot all the time.  lol

If you're in town, avoid Times Square at all costs, it is a tourist trap and most native NYers avoid it like the plague. There is nothing authentic or good about it: overpriced chain restaurants, Disney, and chintzy souvenier stores. Bleh! That's not NYC.

If you let me know what your interests are I may be able to recommend a few places to visit. Same goes for cuisine.

Most corner delis and bodegas have better coffee than Starbucks (charbucks), while they don't have lattes if you just want a cup of joe, it's a better bet for less moolah.

And if it's cannoli's you want (and good coffee, awesome decor and historical atmosphere, kick ass desserts if you feel like indulging) the place I like is Venieros. I've been going there all my life, and actually went to school right across the street. They have a great sit-down cafe area where you can get some cappuccinos, lattes, etc to go with whatever pastry or cake you order. Mind you the place is evil, and I highly recommend their pignoli cookies, lobster tails (puff pastry cone with barvarian cream), millefogli, sfogliatelli, and italian cheesecake.
