Some vitamin or mineral deficiencies cause neurological problems. This is why it's so VERY important for WLS patients to faithful about taking all their vitamins and supplements, AND getting regular bloodwork done. Taking your supplements alone isn't good enough---you MUST get the bloodwork done regularly in order to know if you're taking the right things in the right amounts for YOUR body. It's important to track any trends in your levels, so you can tweak your supplements and catch problems early, before they cause permanent damage.
This is true for ALL forms of WLS, even the Band and the Sleeve. Even though those procedures don't cause malabsorption, they DO limit the amount of food one can eat, making it VERY difficult to get everything one needs from food alone.

It is very true that vitamin defficiencies can cause significant symptoms. I was having some really weird, but life style limiting problems. I was being investigated for MS. Turns out I had a vitamin B12 deficiency. (Too much Zantac can block the absorption of B12.) I was so greatful that it was fixable by taking vitamins!
B12 deficiency can actually cause permanent nerve damage. Often the damage will not go away even if you get your B12 level up again. That's why it's so important for WLS folks to get labs done to monitor their B12 levels and for all RNY patients (and anyone whose B12 is on the low side) to take B12 regularly. Ideally, your B12 level should be around 1000 or above.
