Kindness matters - pay it forward.
People can be very kind, especially when so many are hurting. It really warms the soul.
What has been so disturbing in our society is lack of responsibility. People don't own up to what they are responsible for, causing destruction along the way as they pave right through to obtain their own self-serving goals.
We could use a lot more self responsibility.

Normal BMI (24.9) = 159#: would have to compromise my muscle mass to get here without plastics, so this is not a goal.

Beth,
That is WONDERFUL!! I have had something like this happen a few times over the past few years. When the girls were about 18 months old, I was coming close to running out of diapers. I was a single parent with no financial assistance from anyone (including the government) working full time. But because gas had gotten so expensive and my medical costs were so high, I simply didn't have the money. I went to the local Freecycle site I was a part of and asked for leftover diapers that anyone may have on hand from a kid that outgrew them, etc. I got an e-mail back from someone who lived on the block behind my apartment complex. She said she did have some leftover from her son who just outgrew the size I was looking for, so we agreed to meet at Toys R Us the next day after work. When I got there, she was there, but didn't have just leftover diapers. She had FOUR boxes of size 4 Pampers Cruisers she had just bought from Toys R Us and a case of wipes (which I hadn't said I needed). She said that after she spoke with me before, she got an unexpected cash bonus at work and decided to use part of that to help ME. That one act of kindness gave me diapers for the girls for just over four months! In turn, I gave all the girls outgrown clothing/shoes to a 17 year old girl who was pregnant with twins (girls)...and had nothing for them. I could have (and often did) sell their outgrown clothing b/c it was in high demand, but since someone helped me, I wanted to do the same for someone else. It DOES feel amazing.
I'm teaching the girls to be thankful for what they have because there is ALWAYS someone else out there that is worse off then we are and it is easy to take that for granted until we find ourselves in a position of having nothing. My mother always taught me that what you do comes back to you threefold and in this life...I have certainly found that to be true!
Random acts of kindness ROCK...and I think they are even more rewarding when you are able to be the GIVER!

You is kind
You is smart
You is important
When people focus on their own hurt too much it makes them lash out. They get wraped up in it and become too self focused. Too much self focus chips away at your empathy and once that is gone you continue the cycle of hurting again. I wish I could say I learned this from watching other people but the harsh reality is I learned this because it was (and maybe still is) me.
It gets me to thinking about those people who anonymously paid off those lay-a-ways at KMart for people this holiday. It was so nice.

I totally agree and try to live every single day his way. Today when shopping at Stop and Shop I got back cash just so I could give to the Salvation Army man out front. I went home and baked batch upon batch of Christmas cookies to try to bring some Christmas spirit to my bf's family who is in the middle of a family tragedy. It easy to be nice and very rewarding.
