Is anyone a vegan with gastric bypass? ? Is your Bariactric Dr. Okay with this food plan? I would appreciate any thoughts regarding issues , especially potential complications following a vegan diet. I am following Esselstyn's "Prevent And Reservse Heart Disease." although I have only been on it for a week, No dairy, no animal protein, and no oil. I can already feel a difference!
I had Gastric Bypass 14 years ago, had a 1-1/2 feet of small intestine removed due to bowel obstruction about 5 years ago. I have maintained weight loss but want to rescue my health rather than be a "victim." thanks.

Hi Gr8tful42day, I started with Esselstyn's book and found it a little limiting. I know one person that's 100% compliant with it. I use a cookbook by Dr. Barnard that gives the nutritional value of each recipe (including protein grams). It's pretty awesome. I found the PCRM (Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine) website via Esselstyn.
My cholesterol is awesome! After 2-3 months, it dropped to 210 and about two months ago, it was 190. I'm still waiting for the LDL to drop as that's really critical. I'm hoping to hear good news tomorrow.
My husband and I both feel better on this diet - even when we're not fully compliant. I don't know what my bariatric doctor thinks as I'm about 4 hours away from him and haven't gone back in 9 months. My PCP is doing my labs and I seem to be ok.
Good luck with the diet.

Dr. Garth Davis, my bariatric surgeon, is a vegan. Find his page on fb and "like" it. He posts stuff there and you can ask him questions.

No diet under the sun is going to help you if you are genetically predisposed to making more of your own cholesterol.  Animals make cholesterol, some more than others.  Keep taking your statin drugs and seeing your PCP and cardiologist and just get on with life.  The drugs inhibit the enzyme that causes your body to make more cholesterol.

Hi Kayla, I am genetically pre-disposed to making cholesterol and it definitely runs in my family. My cholesterol lowered significantly after I had my DS. It was 1 1/2 years after that when I altered my diet and it's lowered significantly since then also. I'm taking my statins, but also choosing other ways to increase my health. It's definitely working.
