Hi: I am thinking about VSG. My blood readings are low, I take only one pill a day for diabetes. No wars on surgeries between friends.
Happy 2012

Tenacious88,

Just make sure about the skills and reputation of your surgeon, prepare yourself well for the surgery (protein, vitamins, breathing excercises) and you will be fine.  I was VERY diabetic, using two types of insuline , plus oral medicine and had several obesity related health issues.
I had the DS, NO complications at all, I walked out of the hospital without diabetes (three days later), got rid of all the medicines, and up to this day I am a much slender, happy and healthy person.
Don't be discouraged.  Just be well informed, take good care of yourself and you will be fine.  Best for you.

Peace and good.

It's true that your risk of leaks is higher if you are a Type II diabetic but they aren't that high to begin with -- the majority of people don't have leaks even Type II diabetics.

I was on two types of diabetes meds to keep my sugar somewhat under control. I had my only insulin shot immediately after surgery. Never took another pill or insulin for diabetes. That was over two years ago. I healed very well.

I have since had a panniculectomy and healed amazingly well. My plastic surgeon said he was in awe of my healing ability. So I think i'm doing ok....lol.

Ask your doctor every question you need to ask to feel comfortable with him/her. The only silly question is the one unasked. He gets paid a good sum of money to not only do the surgery but to make you healthy and survive it. So please check in with him/her often. Their job is your life and health!!!!

Met my first goal, met my second goal, met my surgeons goal. Now I have a new goal!

I was type II on metformin 500 mg twice a day preop. Been off it since surgery. Not sure what my a1c is but my last fasting was 106 a few weeks ago. I asked my GP if I should restart metformin and he said no. My insurance company wants it below 99 to give me a 25% discount on insurance.

And my non diabetic, morbidly obese, preop VSG friend had an open hysterectomy and had a terrible time healing, wound vac and home health care and everything.

Do your research, make your decision, trust your surgeon, follow the plan and you should do well. Good luck, and happy New Year!

I was a type 2  diabetic presurgery . I had BIG problems with bruises that would never heal ... diabetic retinopathy , and  out of control triglycredises , cholesterol and  blood sugars despite a very reasonable diet .    ) ( and a lot of exercise for an MO person)

My diabetes was COMPLETELY resolved post op  in the HOSPITAL !!!!

I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT !!!!

after YEARS of struggling .. to have totally NORMAL blood sugars  without  ANY medication ?!!!!

After I'd been on medication 3x a day for YEARS ?!!

Yes I healed GREAT !!!!  I had  no problems with my leak test  or moving or walking the halls after surgery .   My gratitude keeps me compliant to this day ...

WLS is the awesomest  BEST way to resolve diabetes !!! big hug
