Dr. Oz - The Gastric Surgery You Should Be Getting

Screen Shot 2012-01-23 at 8.35.13 AM

Dr. Oz tells us today on his show that there's a Gastric Surgery We Should Be Getting.

*sideways eyeball*  Really, Dr. Oz?  I *know* that I am a few pounds from qualifying for a Lap-Band, but, uh... don't rub it in.

The clip suggests there is an underused method of preventing and curing lots of the co-morbid conditions of obesity, and that the surgery can be done on lower weight individuals.  The clip shows images of three options:  Gastric Banding, Roux-en-y Gastric Bypass and the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy.  Not shown:  the duodenal switch, which I assume would be the most underused at least here in the United States.   The clip makes it sound like the option could be banding -- because of the suggestion of using this surgery on lower BMI patients.  Hopefully, Dr. Oz gives all procedures a mention, and explains the realistic risks and benefits of all.

Check out Dr. Oz today -- it's on at various times -- check your local TV schedule.

That's a pretty poor looking sleeve, I must say. With that much stomach left at the bottom near the pyloric valve, there's room for stretch for days. I wish I could say they don't make 'em like that anymore, but unfortunately some do

I don't know that much about RNY but is that drawing what they really look like? It has no resemblance to the drawing in my seminar materials.

Highest weight: 335 lbs, BMI 50.9
Pre-op weight: 319 lbs, BMI 48.5
Current range: 140-144, BMI 21.3 - 22

175+ lbs lost, maintaining since February 2012

Yeah, that's what the one in my educational materials looked like. Thought I wasn't imagining it.

I was surprised to hear Dr. Oz say on another of his episodes that MORE people should be having WLS.

Actally, based on the clip, it sounds like he is going to be talking about DS.  Besides the assertion that you will lose weight "instantly" , everything else would pertain to what the DS is scientifically proven to do.  It should be interesting to watch.

I jus****ched the Dr.Oz show on the PROS of bypass. I wasn't that impressed. He sure didn't mention any of the CONS, but then I think he was trying to get more people to HAVE the surgery and not wanting them to be discouraged.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not against any WLS. I am soon to be (Feb 4, 2012) 15 yrs post my RNY. It was pretty much the only surgery back then and I was only morbidly obese. The docs then did biliopancreatic diversions, but only on the superobese patients. NO sleeves back then.
I feel like I am a success patient, though I have had a few 'issues', none life-threatening. I was smart and always took the vitamins and B12 religiously. I did have BILE REFLUX pretty much the whole time post-op and got patted on the shoulder by every doc and sent on my way saying, "That can't happen." Well it can and I finally got it proved and also repaired last July 2011....surgically moved the roux limb farther down the intestine. Funny, but since surgery, I've not had ONE SINGLE bout of bile refluxing, no heartburn (because it was NOT heartburn, no hiccoughs or sneezing when my pouch is getting full since the surgery. Otherwise, I'm healthy and happy now. I don't know IF the Dr.Oz show had told MY story IF many people would run to their bariatric MDs or not. I've never been a diabetic...even at 392lbs. I think his show was mainly for the purpose of getting diabetics to get better help to STOP their disease.

 Not impressed either.

It was a commercial.
