Dr. Oz - The Gastric Surgery You Should Be Getting

I didn't think it was THAT bad.  He did mention that it takes a lifetime commitment to behavior and lifestyle changes and that if you aren't ready to do that you shouldn't proceed.  The segment was DEFINITELY directed at morbidly obese people with the co-morbidity of diabetes.  It wasn't really for general weight loss.  That was mentioned in passing, but the emphasis was on diabetes and the research being done on how this surgery can help those who do not currently meet the criteria for weight, but who are fighting diabetes. The entire emphasis was on RNY.

I know that's why I had RNY.  Despite my morbid obesity, I didn't have the surgery for my weight; I had the surgery because my diabetes was killing me.  I had become so insulin resistant that 8 shots of 2 types of insulin plus oral meds were no longer working.  I was starting to suffer organ damage.  I was eating 500 calories a day and getting NOWHERE. This surgery was my last chance.  Fortunately, I was lucky - I was one of the 85/88% - I came home from the hospital off all diabetes meds.  I am thankful every day not to be giving myself those damn shots. I've HATED them for nearly 20 years!

They did present someone (who didn't look at all heavy to me and yet she said she had gained all of her weight back during the course of having 3 children - maybe it's me) *****gretted having the surgery.  So it wasn't completely one sided.  After all, it was only a 12 minute segment.

I think Dr. Oz' message is always going to be Eat Right, Exercise, Everything in Moderation, but for the morbidly obese with diabetes RNY surgery may be the way to go.  I know the DS may have even greater success, but it's still hard to find a surgeon in many parts of the country, so I guess they're not ready to discuss that at this point.

Just my 2 cents, for what they're worth.

Blessings!

I enjoyed watching the show I think mainly because it was my surgeon they were inteviewing and they showed him doing an actually procedure.  He is a great surgeon and has saved my life on several occassions. - I have had tons of complications that if it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be here today.
