I work for an travel agency.....what he is doing can be risky let me tell you why.....
1. The airline can deny him boarding the plane
2. They may try and force him to but a ticket at the counter however the price may be more than you could have bought originally.
3. He could get lucky and be able to sit however if it is a full plane and saying it is seats that are three wide and there is someone that is sitting with you guys. That person could make a stink . If the plane is booked solid they will make you guys get off and put you on standby or another plane that could delay you a lot longer at arriving in Vegas.
4. There could be a possiblilty that there are a couple of seats that they can switch you too in the back of the plane.
If you already know that he can not sit in the regular seats you are better off buying another ticket.
Have you already booked the tickets? What airline are you flying or planning on flying on?

1. Do it anyway. Go ahead and quietly buy the ticket.
2. Wait til you get to the airport.
Choice 1 assures that you will be able to attend the event.
Choice 2 takes a chance that there will be a seat available and possibly miss the event.
I like choice 1 because it shows forethought and empathy for him. Of course, there are consequences to both choices. Only you can decide what is worth most to you.
