Airline Ticket Question

I have a sticky situation that I need some advice on. My boyfriend is working toward bariatric surgery. Hopefully in early June. In the meantime the Vegas Meet and Greet is in May and he is planning on going with me. He went with me to the OH event in October and had a blast. (For those of you that went and were at the Friday night party - he was the guy in the hula outfit!) Anyway, the problem being the policies of the airlines regarding "customers of size" and ticketing. Most if not all of them, are pretty much requiring the purchasing of an extra seat if you cannot fit into a 17" seat without spilling over or under the arm rests. I know that this is going to be the case for him. I tried to tell him that we need to buy three seats for us but he is insistent that we will deal with it when we get to the airport. I want to save him the grief, aggravation and embarrassment (not to mention the huge extra cost because there will be no discount tickets at that point) and just buy the seat. How do I convince him to get it now instead of waiting?

Just buy the seats.  Don't make a big deal about it with him -- many airplane rows are only 3 across anyway.  Sit you, seat, him.. or you, him, seat.... Not a big deal at all.

That's what I want to do, buy them now. He doesn't want to. He wants to wait til we get to the airport to see if they make him do it. Problem with waiting that long is that the flight will likely be sold out and we will be bumped to the next available flight with three seats. And it will be twice as much as it is now!

Debbie,

I work for an travel agency.....what he is doing can be risky let me tell you why.....

1.  The airline can deny him boarding the plane
2.  They may try and force him to but a ticket at the counter however the price may be more than you could have bought originally.
3.  He could get lucky and be able to sit however if it is a full plane and saying it is seats that are three  wide and there is someone that is sitting with you guys.  That person could make a stink .  If the plane is booked solid they will make you guys get off and put you on standby or another plane that could delay you a lot longer at arriving in Vegas.
4.  There could be a possiblilty that there are a couple of seats that they can switch you too in the back of the plane.

If you already know that he can not sit in the regular seats you are better off buying another ticket.

Have you already booked the tickets?  What airline are you flying or planning on flying on?

Deborah - I already know all of this and that is why I am trying to tell him we need to get the extra seat now. I'm afraid that he is going to think that this is my way trying to tell him that I don't want him to go, which is so untrue. Southwest is my airline of choice.

 Here is your choice:

1. Do it anyway. Go ahead and quietly buy the ticket.

2. Wait til you get to the airport.

Choice 1 assures that you will be able to attend the event.
Choice 2 takes a chance that there will be a seat available and possibly miss the event.

I like choice 1 because it shows forethought and empathy for him. Of course, there are consequences to both choices.  Only you can decide what is worth most to you.
