This might have been mentioned already. I am in the middle of making dinner and cannot read all the responses.

Buy the extra seat now because you might get to the airport and the flight is sold out and you may get bumped from the flight.

Do they make you buy a second seat because it may be uncomfortable for a person sitting next to them?  If that is the case why not be sure he has a window seat and you will be in the middle.  That way there is no one else to complain.
I hope this isn't  to simplistic.  I rarely fly so I don't know how it works.  Thankfully the last time I flew when I was MO I sat next to my daughter and there was no issue.

Pretty much yes. they look at it as making sure ALL of their passengers are comfortable. I thought about the middle seat thing too, but I think they would insist on the second seat be purchased before we got on the plane.

buy an extra seat for you, let him buy one seat.....and let him use your extra...  he actually doesn't really even need to know...  at least not until you're in vegas...

just a thought.

Jerris - that's a great idea, thanks. Never thought of doing that.

Or you could just buy two seats and when they tell him he needs an extra seat but the flight is full and there are no more seats to buy and they bump him, you can wave back at him with a big smile as you are walking down the jetway and yell back, "I'll see you in Vegas Honey!". Maybe next time he will be more realistic.  I'm just saying...

I have been purchasing two seats for the last 7 years.  If it turns out there were any empty seats on Southwest or Virgin they have always refunded or credited my extra seat.

This has been my brother's experience as well; not sure with which airlines, though.

It's worth asking the ticketing agency.

Southwest is particularly known for kicking people of size off their flights. I wouldn't risk it if I were you.
