I'm Moving To Brazil, Anyone Want to Come?

Rosas is far from alone. Dr. Ivo Pitanguy, another plastic surgeon in Brazil, made similar comments to The New York Times last year. "The poor have the right to be beautiful, too," Pitanguy then said.     http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/23/plastic-surgery-brazil-poor_n_1375242.html

Brazil isn't alone in helping the "beauty challeneged"
But many in the U.S. might disagree. There can often be
a stigma associated with plastic surgery in America and the notion of offering procedures free of charge can incite the ire of detractors even more. Michael Salzhauer, or Dr. Schnoz, is a prime example. The Orthodox Jewish plastic surgeon is currently offering free procedures to singles in the Miami Orthodox Jewish community in the hopes that it will help some find a spouse. Salzhauer's intention may be to alleviate some of the pressure put on potential wives' looks, but one commentor was "disgusted, and pained" after reading about the idea in the Jewish Press.

I find it kind of offensive to suggest that we have to look a certain in order to find a spouse.  I think what that surgeon means is not really "the poor have the right to be beautiful" but "the poor, like everyone else, have the obligation to try their best to meet some external standard of beauty."  And apparently the surgeons get to determine what is beautiful and what is not, so they can decide how many of us need their services in order to be beautiful.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor.  Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me.  If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her.    Check out my blog.

He might do better with a personal ad:

Looking for mediocre girl with great personality.  I'll make you beautiful.

I believe I understand where he's coming from.

A traditional Mitzvah is to  pay for a wedding for  a poor couple so they don't have to wait and can start  a family and have a  happy supportive  marriage of their own sooner rather than later.

In these shallow times  many wonderful women ( and maybe even men) are left unmarried because  of superficial looks issues .  Perhaps theyve dreamt  of fixing these issues for years but  don't have the funds ... maybe theyve  even spent their bit of disposable income caring for family members etc ...

This doctor is doing a great Mitzvah by encouraging  self confidence and pursuing ones dreams .  I LOVE the idea  of the good - hearted  but self sacrificing  getting the happiness and appreciation they truly deserve !

True , a Barbara  Streisand-like nose shouldn't stop anyone from anything ..but she was the first one to admit she  might have had it operated on  would it  not surely have affected her voice..

Not everyone has the confidence or chuzpah or in-Ur -face talent  of Ms Streisand .  I truly applaud this  kind doctor  for his sensitivity and thoughtful  generosity

I gave this  some serious thought  ...since I have a WLS Niece  that was almost 500 pounds and never married until  42 , Until she was post WLS & PS .  I may have  some personal feelings attached to this issue.  Just some thoughts.....

How many of our Dear friends   have we  met on OH that  have never married ... because of society and how it  felt about  a 400 pound  man or woman ....?  Did a personal ad help  them  ?  Maybe?

Did WLS  help us and our  friends  on many levels  ... Health , Quality of life was the obvious!  Think about  how WLS  helped many of us feel better about  us on other levels.  Plastics can change the life of a soul  born  with a  hair lip , or  ears that stand out  ( me nephew's ears was fixed as a child ) ,  etc ..  Why should any one Judge , what  helps or " frees"  a Soul to feel better  about them self? Do we know  the ridicule  or how cruel  society has been or can be to  physical imperfections such as a hair lip etc.... a child is born with ..and did not ask for?  Do we know  how self conscious  they can or  do feel?  Have we walked in their shoes?

Would we want some one to judge us? Just a thought...
I think the  Doctor is wonderful,  any Doctor that  offers their  Services Free is  wonderful! They are  giving back of  their skills  and time and paying  it for word! The are making a change in a way they can !  Some  WLS doctors do  pro bono work  .... Would we Judge them?
