No one knows I'm getting surgery

Obviously my husband and my manager know (because I'll be off work for about 2-3 weeks).  Did you tell people?  If not, what did you say when they reacted to the weight loss?  Did you just say you were on a diet?  I'm just wondering how to handle my co-workers.

Thanks!
Jill

At first I chose to say nothing just my husband knew cause I am a stay at home mom. Then I told  a few people. I think at first I was ashamed of myself then I didn't care. i tell who I wont and tell them to keep it to theirself if they do they do if not oh well. I told them I needed the extra help to lose, I have tried different things (most knew all the things I tried before) So far I chose to tell who I knew would be postive and help me. i still have three month of per op. I can't wait to get the RNY done.
I think if you don't wont no one to know then don't tell, what is the use in them know what do they gain?

Congrats on getting approved. My surgery is coming up on 5/30. I've only told a few close friends and family. I don't know how I'll handle it either. I think for the most part I will tell if asked but not sure.

Good Luck and keep in touch

Wow, Roxy...yours is coming up fast!  That's so great.  Mine will likely be in July.  I guess I'll just tell people I'm dieting but I'm sure some will figure it out (I work with several in the medical field).  It's none of their business and a very personal decision for me.  I guess I'll just have to play it by ear.

Good luck on your upcoming surgery.  Please keep up posted!

I've only told my immediate family and about 5 friends.  I've been very open about my exercise changes and my dieting in recent months on Facebook, but I haven't mentioned my surgery on June 11th.  So, everyone knows I'm making healthy changes, but I guess they'll think I just discovered an amazing diet once surgery happens!

I like to live openly and honestly, in a transparent manner.  I think being a gay men and coming to term withs being out has pretty much extended to all facets of my life.  So I tell people I had surgery and really don't give a damn whether they judge me on that or not.  Their evaluation or opinion of me doesn't matter to me.

So I tell my coworkers - and here's why, in addition to living transparently:

First, it allows my coworkers to know what to expect.  So no, I'm not going to have your cakepops that you're really proud of making, and you know that because I've told you I've had weight loss surgery.  I'm not going to make up excuses or say "I'm on a diet" - because what I've done extends past "dieting".

Second, I hope that being "out" about my surgery will help and inspire other people.  I waited to have surgery because I felt guilty about it, felt that I should be able to lose weight 'the hard way' with just diet and exercise and all that other stupid crap.  It was after I met someone in person who had WLS and spoke to them that really sent me on the path forward.  So I hope that other people who need the surgery will be inspired by my own success.

You don't have to tell them anything. If you're not gonna tell them you had surgery, then why tell them something else? Just say you aren't comfortable talking about it.

I myself am open about it.

I just think if you lied to people, wouldnt that eat you up inside?

I told a few close friends and family prep. Now as people see me, they tell me I look great and sometimes I just say thank you and others I tell the, I had WLS. I have not had any bad comments from anyone.

My mom gave me a hard time at first, but know she just keeps telling me I can't believe how good you look!

Do what makes you feel good about yourself!

I only told my immediate family and a few close friends when I started the process.  Come to find out, a couple of people that I considered close friends really weren't and were constant "Debbie Downers" and kept saying "well, so and so lost xx pounds just by diet and exercise".  Well, that apparently isn't working for me.  I ended up having to drop them like a hot potato.

The rest of my family and other acquaintances just knew I was losing weight after the surgery, but I was still selective as to who I told due to the reaction of those few at the beginning.  Everyone else, I just told that I was doing a "modified" Atkins and exercising 5 days a week.  The farther out I got, the more open I was about having the surgery and I've found that several people that I told were actually thinking about having the surgery themselves.  So I ended up being their mentor through their process.

It's a personal matter and you do what you feel comfortable doing.

I'm not working right now...so I haven't told anyone but my family.....other than posting it on facebook for friends to know, I sort of want it to be a suprise when folks see me.  lol  bad huh. I really am doing this for my health and happiness and find a new job.  :)  i'll have to ponder that one....after this 2 week liquid diet if anyone says this is the easy way out, I'm certainly going to give them an ear full.   Not sure if I'll just say I've been working on it or surgery.   Good question!
