How much VIt. D

My lab levels for Vit D were around 50 and I take tender D-3 50,000 per day.  I have just been unsure of how much to increase.  My gp was shocked at a level over 30 so I didn't go into it with her.  I know we need more vit. D than normal people, but don't really know why.  Can someone explain why or tell me how much I should be taking to get my level up?

Mel, add an extra one every day til your next labs...then adjust.

As to why....actually EVERYONE needs more Vit D...50 is on the LOW side of normal which is 35-100 now. And as wls patients, we need to be on the high side of normal. So the closer you are to 100, the better.

It's not perfectly clear, but you appear to be saying you take a 50K IU dry D3 daily.  If that is the case, you should be at 80 or more. I had D issues since my RNY.  I was taking 4 of the 50K IU per week for 2 years and labs were at a 65. I've upped it to daily, and upcoming labs will likely show over 90, and then I'll take 1-2 less per week.  If you did mean one 50K dry D3 per day, that's the first time I've seen a post with levels of 50.  What were the units for the score of 50?  DAVE

Dave,

I was taking the 50K dose of D3 daily and mine went from 45 to 32 in 3 months. I had to double mine for 3 months to get mine up.

We all absorb at different levels and DS'ers absorb even less...

No surgery was noted in the text or by the avatar, so I just offered general advice.  Had I seen a DS on the avatar, I would not have posted.  DAVE

Dave, the ONLY reason I knew is I have talked to Mel on the phone...pre-surgery and knew she had gone for a DS. She doesn't have it listed, you're right...

But even for RNY'ers, it can be different depending on the type of RNY they had???

I know Vitalady has info on vitamins for Distal/ERNY and DS'ers all on one document and Proximal RNY'ers are a separate document. So doesn't the type of configuration make a difference in the RNY?

Just curious cause Vitalady says she has the "DS'er malabsoption with the RNY pouch" (she is a Distal).

Not necessarily. I was taking 100,000 a day for a year and only made it to 28. Now I'm taking 250,000 a day.

The topic of two differing test routines are found on a quick Google check. Conventionally, a lot of tests are rated at nmol/L when referring to over 80 for D labs. But there is an equivalent score of 32 ng/ml.  So you need to make sure which lab result you are looking at. It it's the ng/ml, then you're high.  DAVE

Last sentence should read "If it's....
