The reason you need more is because of the malabsorption with your surgery.  You don't absorb vitamin D like "normal" people do.

According to the Linus Pauling Institute, people need a vitamin D level of at least 80.  How much you need to take is however much it takes to get your level there.  It really varies from person to person.

I was told today that my Vit D was 25! My surgery is scheduled for this Thurs. Guess it is pretty normal to have low huh?

A couple of years ago a U.S. study was released that said the majority of Americans are low on their D. Stangely enough, at the same time, Kuwait released a study that said the majority of their citizens were low on D as well.

It took me a good 2 years to get my D levels up, but i didn't see results until I got drastic.  It took me taking 100k iu per day for 2 months, then I backed off to 50k iu daily and it bounced right up to normal range by the time my next blood draw was.
