Buffalo Hump??
HI all! I am wondering if anyone here knows anything about this hump on the back of the neck, between the shoulders.
It is a layer of fat, and common in obese people. I have been seeing a chiropractor for the past few weeks for some moderate to severe pain on back of the neck and into my right shoulder.
They have not acknowledged this lump I have in back of my neck....but looked it up on the pc finally, and I think it is what I have.
Thanks!
Karen

Hi Karen I had my surgery 5-6-04. Doing better. I am also a CMT. Certified Massage Therapist. Alot of people have that. It is not just an obese thing. Now do you have arthritis? What type of work do you do? Sometmes it can be postural injuries, even ergonomics at the workplace or at home on the pc. Massage really does help. If you can get one that would help pain management. Are you going to convention? I will be there mabey I can give you a chari massage!!!! Chat soon, Lianna

Hi Karen. I have that, too. It's commonly called a "dowager's hump." Common in overweight people and the elderly. It should reduce as we lose weight. Mine has been shrinking, but my posture is horrible! I'm trying to work on it.
What I find really interesting is that you and I are having the same exact pain and our surgery dates are close. I went to my PCP and she told me to use a heating pad and gave me some Tylenol 3 with codeine. The pain started in my back/neck and travelled to my shoulder. I didn't get real concerned until my thumb and two fingers started tingling like they were asleep. My PCP thinks I pinched a nerve. I was hoping she would send me to a chiropractor. Let me know if it helps, thanks!
God bless,
Carol

My husband is very touchy, feely. No matter my weight (224 the day I met him) he'd rub my neck, upper back and one day (when I was around 290) he exclaimed: "babe, that's huge!"....hmmmm.
He didn't mean to, but I became very self-conscious of it - at that point...
Not only did it hurt (arthritis in my spine - numb hands, fingers) but I felt like the Hunchback of Notre Dame!
Now, having lost 130 lb, the hump is gone (except for a little bone /arthritis-y stuff - VERY little) and the pain is 99% gone as well! That weight was KILLER on my spine!

Not to worry you or anything but I had an illness called cushings disease that is caused by either pituitary tumors or adrenal tumors, pit in my case and that is one of the main symptoms along with a lot of weight gain and a really round face, stretch marks and a few other things. It can be diagnosed with a test to check your cortisol levels. Maybe look it up on the net see if it sounds like something that may be a problem you have. I hope not but, still even now when my hubby and I are out somewhere we see people with all the physical symptoms walk by and that's the first thing we think of. Good luck, let us know.
