Help! Severe hair loss six years out! Ideas?

 Hey friends,
I have  a problem that is just driving me crazy. I am losing my hair, six years after my RNY. I just got my bloodwork done, and was told that my iron and D are "a little low," but I'm not anemic. They just suggested I take more iron and D. Got it. But seriously, why would being a little low make my hair fall out as if I'd just had surgery?
It's urgent that I get this under control, as I am on tv pretty frequently locally and it's getting sparser and sparser every day.   Not to mention that I'm a woman and we just like having our hair, don't we?

Any tips that actually worked for you?

Usually this is connected to protein malnutrition. How are your protein levels? My hair loss slowed way down when I added a 2nd protein shake to my day.

I get a good bit of protein; I do a daily shake that has 20 grams. I guess I may need to do two, to get close to the sixty grams we're supposed to have. That's what my surgeon recommended back when I got surgery. I'll try harder! Anything to help with this issue. It's horrible.

What are you eating if you are not getting 60g of protein per day from food?   At 6 years out, it is perfectly possible to be eating 90-100g per day ...

Well, I mean I suppose I couId be getting in 20g, I just don't track it.  I get 15 a day just through FF plain greek yogurt. Plus the shake, 20g. Then 6 oz or chicken breast or other meat for dinner, etc. I suppose it's a good amount of protein, just don't add it up daily. I'll have to work on that to see where I really am with it.

 I mean 60+, not 20g.

60g per day is what a person who doesn't malabsorb needs.  Being that you malabsorb some of your nutrients, including protein, you need to take on much more.

On another note - have you been through anything traumatically stressful?  Telogen Effluvium may be triggered by stressful events to the body, like surgery, childbirth, or even something highly emotional.

Valerie, yes, the last year has been stressful, as I began working full-time at a tv station after years of staying home with my children. Plus health problems emerged in one of my boys, etc. So I have considered that, but gosh, this has gone on so long, that I can't imagine that's all it is. I don't know, though.

I'm glad you said that about the 60 grams. I'll work on getting 100 to see if it helps this issue! Thank you so much.

Telogen Effluvium generally starts a few months after the event and lasts for a few months.  Hopefully this is the case, but DO up the protein just the same, for it's good for other reasons.

My body responds better with 100 grams (or more) each day. I just feel better and have more energy with that protein level. Yes, I still drink 2 shakes a day, but it's because it's easy and I don't mind them.
