XP from RNY board Tips and tricks appreciated for liquid diet

First I want to say thank you beforehand for anyone that can give any helpful hints for a pre surgical liquid diet.

I am having laproscopic surgery on Nov 7 for multiple reasons - Incisional hernia, possible Hiatal hernia defect repair, adhesion cleanup, possible Y connection change (if the adhesions have damaged that area). My RNY was done open back in 2003 due to the possibility of adhesions of which there were and the surgery took 2 hours longer so I did not have to do a liquid diet except the day before.

With this surgery I need to do a 7 day protein liquid diet with my evening meal being a small amount of food (meat, salad or veggies). The day consists of 2 liquid protein meals, 3 snacks of SF Jello, SF popsicles or a protein shake made with 2% milk. The day before surgery I am on only clear liquids with that being water flavored or plain, broths, Isopure or ProteinBlitz, SF popsicles or Jello etc. I am totally on board with why I need to do this - to help shrink the liver. I have decided to go a couple steps further and start the liquids 3 days early as I do not want them to need to convert to an open procedure. They still might need to do that if the adhesions are real bad.

I am finally getting to my question - request. Do any of you have any tips, tricks, ideas for getting through the liquid diet? What worked for you? I do know about occupying my time with reading, crafts, house cleaning (I am sure I will have nesting syndrome next week) . . .

Thanks for your time.

Oh - PS I will be on the liquid protein diet for a week after the surgery and then to a minimum of 1 week of blended food after that. They will revisit food at my first PO appointment.

small amount of food (meat, salad or veggies).   My liquid diet didn't consist of this.   I was on a 2-week liquid diet that only had 5 1/2 shakes, broths, sf popsicles, jello, and drinks per day.  I divided my shakes up so I had one every 2 hours (my meal), then, in between "meals", I had one of the others like an entire small box of sf lime jello, then a "meal", then a can of broth and so on.  I was not going more than an hour without something and not only kept busy, but felt more satisfied.  I didn't always eat the entire box of jello or can of broth, but I had to get at least 64 oz of liquids in anyway and usually stayed satisfied.  I made my own broth, it has less salt, which I have to keep to a minimum.

Best wishes,  Les

The food that is eaten is a variation of a Medifast diet. I think they call it a 5 and 1. 5 liquid meals and 1 food meal. I was cut back from the 2 weeks to one due to me being a WLS PO patient.

I like your idea of dividing the shakes up so you basically have something that is going in your mouth almost every hour.

I also need to get in the minimum of water that goes with out saying.

Thank you for your input.

Crystal Light flavor packets help me.  (I lost 72 pounds last year on the medifast diet.)  You can use them to flavor shakes or water.  After the first 2 or 3 days, I never felt any hunger due to ketosis.  Have you tried making the jello into Knox Blox?  Maybe it'll feel  more like a meal then.  Good luck to you!

Help me with making the Knox Blox.

I really do not need to loose the weight just not feel hungry. I have a bunch of Medifast shakes packets in the house and that will be used for when I am not at work. I will take the ready mades to work. I walk to work 1/2 mile each way and do not have many "tools" available other than my lunch box and the fridge at work.

Thank you.
