Hello to all !

I am un the middle of my weight loss journey and I am exploring all the different types of weight loss surgeries available.

I would like your opinions on which surgery may best suit me, based on your opinion, and my health issues.

I am 29, female, I have very high cholesterol, borderline diabetes, polycycstic ovarian syndrome accompanied with amenorrhea (no menstrual cycles) , knee and ankle pain, tmj, and I may have sleep apnea (still waiting for a sleep study to be completed). I am 5'2", and weigh 260 lbs. I would like to become a healthy weight, according to my height (120-130 lbs.), but I do not want to become so thin that I become ill and malnourished.

VSG on 10/09/12
I am 5 ft 0, highest weight was 222 lbs. Surgery weight 208 lbs. goal 110-120 lbs. I had a VSG a month ago and a very easy and smooth recovery and lost 24 lbs already. I am VERY happy with my decision to have WLS and with my choice of surgery. I also had diabetes and since three days post op my blood sugar has been normal. My blood pressure meds have been reduced. I no longer snore. I have a blog post in my profile about why I chose the VSG. You can access it as it is open to everyone. Good luck with what you choose!!

Hi,

I chose the VGS and am having surgery on dec. 3rd.

I too have polycystic ovarian syndrome (no cycle) amongst other things like pre diabetes, hypertension, and mitral valve prolapse...yada yada

im 5'5' 240lbs and 22 years of age

I discussed the type of surgery to have with my pcp and my surgeon. We right away x'd out the RNY bc I have a larger frame and the RNY would just not be appropriate for me. Then we talked about the lap band but after a while of looking it over chose not to just due to the chance of slippage, corrosion, and maintenance. So I chose the VGS because it was a great option for MEand my lifestyle. but we are all different and must evaluate what would be better for us.

Also my surgeon said it would be better on a possible future pregnancy for me to just get the VGS.

Just don't consider the band and any of the others will be good!

I honestly think that is a choice to make with the advice of your surgeon. I am quite happy with my RNY as I am sure others are with their choice. None of us are doctors.....ask yours, he/she has the best information about what choices are best for your conditions.

I don't understand the previous poster saying that with RNY she would lose too much ....I spend most of my time on the RNY board, and I have NEVER see anyone post that they lost too much!

There's a book called "Weight loss surgery for Dummies"  where the bariatric surgeon gives pros and cons with all types of surgery. I'm 5'0 1/2 inch tall.  When I started the process,  I was 55 years old, weighed 327 lbs, had sleep apnea joint pain in the knees, ankles, hips , and early stages of diabetes.  Date of surgery, I was down to 287.  What the deciding factor for me was the eating style was better suited for my tastes.

I suggest the ds, and urge you to review the site DSFACTS.com ,   the popular 3 surgeries mimic the cure of diabetes because you don't eat carbs,  the ds cures diabetes by altering you digestion of carbs, big difference.   my problem with the rny is that you cant take Naiads for life,  that is no anti inflammatory meds for future arthritis , muscle injuries,  or coronary inflammatory ailments.  and no "baby aspirin for you "    those are limitation that will have life long restriction on your future medication cabinet.

the VSG is stage one of the DS , if it is less than satisfactory you can go forward  fo a complete ds  , and the ds can be reversed readily,  this is not the case with the rny,

fortunately you are seeing the foremost expert on the ds, Dr Gagner determined and engineered my surgery in 2004,  then it took 7 years to resolve insurance and surgeon issues to get it done his way.
