I am growing more concerned about this the closer I get to knowing my surgery date which will be in the next couple weeks. How long were you on a liquid only, then pureed only....why is each surgeons post diet so different? I've read so many different things. some dr's done want you eating solids for nearly 12 weeks to allow the stoma*****ision to heal to avoid any perforations which makes perfect sense and there's other things i've read that says within 4 weeks you'll be eating some solids. did you get sick when you ate? did you feel hungry on the liquid only?

Hello! I am a soon to be VSG- next wednesday!. I met with my Dr and nutritionist last night to disucss the first 30 days of surgery. Stages 1 adn 2. stage 1 is literally liquids for a week. She, my NUT, wrote down from the time you wake up start with Isopure (it has a lot of protein) sip it in a 2-4oz cup like one of those bathroom cups. Then a 1/2 hr later after you finish have the same amount in water. Then an hour or so later repeat and always start with the protein first thing in the morning to get your body going. Around lunch time and for dinner sip on fat free WITH sodium (not sodium free- she said the salt helps with nausea) broth- chicken, veggie, beef etc. Also she said I can have as many sugar free ice pops as i desire, it gives you something to do and also has the 'water' to keep up hydration. That will last about a week.

Then stage 2 she told me is softer foods- sugar free jello, pudding, yogurt with no fruit but you dont have to have plain yogurt because its too boring and some people cant handle that bland taste. So I will buy vanilla  yogurt. Creamy soups- chicken for example - she said in a pot on the stove heat up 1 can of the soup with half a can of 1% milk, then when its done boiling strain any pieces of chicken out- sometimes its painful that early on to eat any bits of normal food. You can do that with any creamy soup.

She said that will be about 30 days post op. I will meet with her, my NUT, 2-3 weeks after surgery to discuss stage 3 and 4 (lifetime) diet.

They told me that I wont really have the "hunger" feeling in the beginning. For me its hard to believe because right now pre op i always feel hungry until I stuff my face with food until I want to vomit lol. They told me it wont be like that anymore and you will play a little game to test how much you can hold at first and how fast you can get your liquids/creamys down.

Good luck =)

Follow your doc's plan and don't worry about everyone else's.  You'll make yourself crazy.

The month after surgery sucks, and I suspect that's true for all of the surgeries.  You've had major surgery, and you feel icky, even if you're not in pain.  You're stuck drinking liquids that, even if you like them, they get old.  Yes, you may feel hungry.  Some of it, maybe most of it, is head hunger; it may be stomach acid; it may be dehydration.

That's the bad news.  The good news is that you'll survive it and it gets better, particularly when you can start eating real food again.  By a few months out, you've developed your new "normal."
