Adhesions ...can anyone relate?
Just got discharged from hospital. Long story short, Friday started out a normal day. By the end of the day, I was in serious abdominal pain, vomiting, and a trip to the ER. CT scan showed small bowel obstruction. Had surgery the next day. All seems to be well now except for the normal surgery discomfort. My surgeon told me that the obstruction was due to adhesions from a bowel surgery that I had BEFORE my gastic bypass. I know that I have read on here that there are those that suffer from adhesions from their RNYs. I am very discouraged right now. How much of this am I in for down the road? Has anyone had experience with this? Just looking for some input. How often can this happen? Because of the rapid onset of this, I am just feeling very fragile right now. Like "have I done something to myself that is going to create more problems later" kind of thinking. Thanks in advance for any input you can give.

The only time I had adhesions from any surgery I've had (I've had 10 at least) was from my first c-section with my twins. When I had my triplets 3 years later (yup triplets! LOL) it took the surgeon 1/2 hour to get to my uterus because he had to cut through so many. Since then, I never have had any discomfort from adhesions.
Unfortunately, with any surgery, you can develop adhesions and there isn't any way to prevent them.

Mal, thank you. I just needed to hear that there were those who have had multiple surgeries and did not suffer constantly with problems from adhesions. I'm hoping that this episode was a one and only....during my RNY, my surgeon spent 3 hours taking down adhesions from this same surgery that caused the problem on Friday. (that surgery was a bowel resection due to a benign mass found there). He told me that this obstruction was not due to my RNY. Thanks again for your response. Have a wonderful holiday season.

The doc said I was full of adhesions with my bowel infarct. They could have been from my c-section or RNY we would never know. She took tons of them during the surgery in '04 and I haven't had problems since.
Adhesions are interior scar tissue that kinda glues things together- a risk from any surg.
Good luck

I have had a belly full of adhesions for years. My RNY was done open (9+ years ago) due to them and they grew back and then some. I had 19 surgeries prior to that due to my gall bladder turning into pancreatitis and during my lengthy hospital stay they had to debreed the wound many times over. I have felt my intestinal track get stuck on the inside for years with it not being too much of an issue until this past January when I had my first bowel obstruction and then my second one this past July. On November 7th my WLS surgeon went in and took down the adhesions. Unfortunately he could not finish them all the way up to the liver and pouch area due to the length of my surgery which was at the 4hr mark. They will not go back in and finish cleaning the adhesions up because they feel that they cleaned up the area that was causing the obstruction. I have had a couple of DVTs in the past and they were worried about me throwing a clot during/after surgery. Adhesions can happen to anyone that has had surgery but women are more likely to get them due to C sections. People that have not had surgery can also get adhesions. They could have had a blow to the belly from a car accident, fall or other injury. I think the % is something like 15%. The adhesions will come back but docs will never know from patient to patient how bad or fast. They are from your body over healing itself. It is something you will just need to be aware of for the rest of your life.

Thank you, Christine. Wow, you are the expert on adhesions! I'm so sorry that you have had such a time with them. I guess the good thing is that now I know what to be on the lookout for in terms of symptoms. I just knew something was not right. Tried to blame it on a flu bug going around, but deep down I just knew. Thanks again for sharing.
