Wedding dress shopping after weight loss sugery

I had a VSG on August 13th and have lost 80 pounds in the last 4.5 months (21 weeks). I am getting married in May and am receiving a TON of pressure from my mom, sister, and aunts to go try on wedding dresses. Are they crazy? There is no way a dress I order now will fit me 4 months from now, even if I do plateau soon. I can’t get anyone to realize this and it is driving me crazy. None of my cousins got their dresses until 2 months before, and they didn’t even have the surgery so I don’t see what the big deal is all of a sudden. I have an appointment scheduled @ Davids Bridal for January 26th and I think that is too soon. Any thoughts, or anyone who went through the same experience?

I am actually going through the same experience now. I had my RNY aug 22nd and have also lost 80 lbs. Im getting married in September and am also concerned about the dress being able to fit. I went to Davids Bridal the day after Christmas just for fun with my sister and they didn't really have anything that I liked that I could try on. Im still too big to fit into most dresses. I think that I am just going to wait til about a month or two before the wedding and hope for the best. Alterations will be inevitable so I dont plan on spending a lot of money on a dress. This is also my second wedding so don't plan on wearing a "cupcake" dress anyway. Best wishes on your upcoming wedding!

Is there any chance that it will be fun to go and shop and try on dresses .....but not order for a while.

they probably just want to share the experience with you and see you  looking like a bride.

you could choose a style ... And then go back in  late March for a final decision and place an order.

When trying on dresses - ask them point-blank how easy it will be to alter the dress on the fly given your situation?  Some dresses will be easier to alter than others.  If you fall in love with something that can only be made smaller so much - then the next question is how fast you can get it in at the last minute when you're ready to order.

I had my surgery April 3 and got married Sept 22 . I waited until a couple months before but they said that around 20 lbs= 1 size.  They said they could make an 18 into a 14 easily. I ended up ordering a dress online a month before.  Go to the consult and get an idea of what you like.  Find out when you have to order at the last minute. You can wait up until that point. Weight loss really slows down imo around 6-8 months and you will have a general idea of where you will be ... how much do you have to lose still?

I would go just to try on some...get your feel of what style you want and if others want to try and order theirs go for it. As for you, well, i think you already know what you WANT to do so just go and play dress up with your gal pals cherish this time with them....I look back on "my time' and smile

Congrats on your upcoming Wedding! : ) Honestly, I think it's ultimately up to you. Although you're experiencing some pressure from your family, this is still a vulnerable time. It would be unfortunate for you to go and try on dresses if you're not at your goal weight, because you won't be able to see how you'll look once you've lost even more weight closer to May. It might be a bit discouraging.

That being said, as some others have said it could be fun to see what kinds of styles you're leaning towards. And I'm sure the quality time with your family could be fun. Just make sure to ask about alterations and last minute dress purchases. In 99% of cases, you can't return a dress once it's been purchased so don't make any rash decisions there.

Good luck and enjoy your special day!

I went through dress fitting for my brother's wedding. I had no choice but to order the dress before my surgery. I ordered a couple sizes small and when I went to have it altered 3 months later the dress basically had to be torn apart and put back together. I strongly recommend that you go dress shopping now, ask many questions about timing of when to order but really think more about finding a good seamstress. Enjoy your amazing success! You have lost a lot of weight already and that is worth celebrating. By the way, the cost of getting the dress fit to me was more then the dress but the cost of dancing my heart out was priceless!!

I bought my wedding dress off the rack at davids bridal, one month before. When you get yours, pay the extra 150 for a corsetted back and buy it a size smaller. That way you can cinch it up or let it loose as needed. And David's bridal stuff usually fits right off the rack so really no alterations should be needed.

GOOD LUCK ON YOUR SPECIAL DAY!
