Like Rani said...major electrolyte imbalance.  And learning to eat better eventually?  Ummm NO!  I'm gonna feast on whatever the hell I want, turn on my fat vacumn and roll on!  Prolly to the ice cream parlour for dessert!

Cutting open your belly, removing 85% of your stomach, cutting apart your intestines and sewing them back on to your stomach followed by foaming, mucous, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and malabsorption sounds pretty horrific as well when you think about it.  Aspiration of stomach contents would not, by itself, be likely to cause major electrolyte abnormalities.  Not that I am advocating vomit aspiration....

What WLS did you choose?

Well, I haven't had any foaming, mucous, diarrhea, vomiting, or abdominal pain, but it does sounds pretty terrible when you put it that way. As a DSer, I run across a LOT of medical people who've never heard of my surgery. A couple of years ago I had a bowel obstruction, and to make certain we were on the same page re what my guts SHOULD look like, I showed the people who did my upper GI follow-up the little card I carry just for that purpose. In the space of 2 hours I had three people exclaim "What did they do THAT for?"

1:  You are describing only the RNY with the rerouting of the anatomy.  There isn't actual removal of the stomach, that is the sleeve.  Of course vomiting frothing etc isn't the "goal" with ANY WLS.

2: You are simply incorrect about an electrolyte imbalance.  In hospitalized folks where they have a feeding tube, and they are not tolerating their feeds, we are not supposed to discard the residual volumes left in the stomach for this very reason.  Discarding it throws off potassium as well as other electrolytes.  Potassium being a huge factor in cardiac function, you can throw someone into cardiac dysrhythmias and even death.  Electrolyte imbalances can KILL you.  It is VERY important.  Please try not to advise ppl if you're not sure of your facts.

I thought she was describing the DS, with the reduced stomach and the intestinal rerouting. Oh, but she does say "sewing them back on to your stomach", doesn't she?

oh my, that sounds horrible. Why would you eat a half gallon of ice cream and then suck it back out? It sounds dangerous, disgusting, and it does NOTHING to change peoples habits or help to establish better and more healthful ways of eating and living.

I am just trying to get a visual here,  So you go out to dinner and eat tons of junk, then you have to find a private place like a bathroom and empty smelly, messy vomit out of your stomach? This sounds like it will fail miserably. I would personally feel ashamed that I was wasting all of that food, and pretty grossed out by sucking it all out of my stomach.

Crazy crazy stuff, but super interesting! Great article MM, thanks!

Assisted Bulimia, where the hell was that when I was puking in a bag for 12 years.  Gesh.  I should have thought of that.

Well, the bullemics will feel much more validated with an actual medical device instead of a spoon to gag themselves with, right?
