Magnesium Citrate after a RNY

I had a RNY on 1/4/11. I have lost 90 pounds. I had no complications and I followed everything I was told.

Now, I am scheduled for a hysterectomy in 3 days (Valentines Day ) and I have directions to drink Magnesium citrate the night before.  The directions say to drink 300 ml at 6pm the night before my surgery and another 300 ml at 11pm. What I am afraid of is that this is way too much for me and my system.

What I read about Magnesium citrate is that it causes fluid from the body to flood the bowel and ru**** on out. Does this sound familiar to anyone? It sounds like a scary bowel dump, I had one 9 months after my surgery and it wasn't fun. I have no desire to do it on purpose.

Besides the fact that, I believe, the liquid is carbonated.

Has anyone had to drink this after having RNY? Help, I would love anyones opinion.

Thanks, Kirstenmia

This sounds like a definite question for your surgeon. I agree with you about the carbonation!! Plus, that could drain you dry of all fluids. So hard to rehydrate. I wouldn't drink a sip without talking to your WLS surgeon. Scary stuff.

Good Luck Honey!

As a RN and RNY patient too....I say talk too your WLS surgeon, and make sure uour GYN surgeon is 100% aware!
Mag citrate is carbonated, and hes is putting you in danger of dehydration etc., Make sure both Drs. Consult each other!!

Thank you,

I did call today and they said do not drink the Magnesium Citrate. Instead the nurse at the weight loss clinic said they have an alternative method for the same outcome :

... take 2 docolax then two hours later drink a 32 ounce sugarfree powerade that has had a half of a bottle of mirelax poured into it. Do this 2 times using the times the doctor set up for the other cleansing program.

I will do the first one but I will see what I feel like after that.... I never have a lot of food in my system and if I feel like I am "cleansed" I will not drink anymore.

Thank you for your help,

Kirstenmia
