Pre-Op Gastritis?

Hey guys,

So I'm freaking out a bit and here's why. I've started having random stomach pains usually 2-3 hours after eating. It's happened once 2 weeks ago and then again this last Friday. The pain is the worst pain I have ever had and is in the middle of my stomach above my belly button and below my chest.  It usually feels better after I make myself throw up.  This last Friday was enough to send me to the ER. They did blood work and everything came out fine, but the doctor told me to follow up with a gastric specialist because it could be an ulcer. He has me on high dose pepcid 2x a day.

So here's where my worrying comes into play. I am still pre-op. I have never had these pains before I started the 1200 calorie high lean protein and low carb diet to lose my 10% of weight to get a surgery date. Could my change in diet have something to do with this? Will this affect me getting a sleeve? Could it just be stress? (

I had an ultrasound on my gallbladder after the first attack and it came back fine, no gallstones at all which matched the bloodwork too.

I had the same thing happen to me about 2 1/2 months into my supervised diet. My doctor said that it was either gastritis or an ulcer and prescribed Omeprazole. It took probably 1 1/2 weeks before it started to work, but I haven't had the problem since. It was exactly how you describe the pain, but for me it didn't take 2-3 hours.. it was right away after eating. It was in the exact same spot and just terrible! My gall bladder ultrasound (that I had done at the ER because I couldn't wait days for an appointment anymore) showed that there were no stones.

It was frustrating for me because they had no reason why it was happening. The ER doctor said it was my diet (because I was fat) and assumed I had been eating really terrible stuff. When I told him I had a perfectly clean diet for 2 1/2 months and had lost 35 lbs, he was like "Oh, well... I don't know what caused it!" I never got an answer on whether it was gastritis or an ulcer and no answer on why it happened. I guess I was just glad at the time that it had stopped!

Hang in there! Hopefully the medication will help soon. I know exactly how you feel and I really do feel for you! I could barely eat anything for the week that it took before the medication kicked in! Hugs to you!!

How weird!! That's exactly it, I've been on the diet since Feb 21, and am down 29 pounds now. How strange. I had a theory that maybe, because we're eating less food, that there's more stomach acid in our stomach from when we used to eat more? I dunno, but it's strange >__

I have also read (and I think the doctor in the ER confirmed? but I can't remember) that eating protein requires more acid... so the more protein that you eat, the more your body make acid to help break down and digest it. That could be the case?

It's strange because I didn't even have "heartburn" or feel stomach acid before the pains started coming on and I haven't felt them since. I was off the Omeprazole for almost a month because of my H Pylori test and nothing came back. It's hard to say what was happening! I hope that it doesn't affect your VSG plans either!

hmm... yea I've never had heartburn like ever, so this is all new to me! I have a phone consultation on Tuesday with a gastric specialist. I'll keep you updated if I find anything new out =)

Also, I'm afraid of this interfering with the VSG, because i know they dont recommend the sleeve if you have acid reflux! =X ahh! so stressful.
