Nausea at night

Hi everyone,

I have had really good success since my RNY 6 months ago.  I'm down over 100 lbs since surgery and generally feeling good.  However, in the past few weeks, I have noticed a weird pattern where I am getting dry heaves 4-5 nights a week, usually right at bedtime.  I have tried making sure I am not eating too close to bedtime and I am getting plenty of hydration. Has anyone else experienced this or does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Maybe you're letting yourself get too hungry? When I was early out I noticed I often woke up queasy, and I started eating a high-protein snack just before bedtime. It made all the difference in the world!

My post op stomach was so small, that after a few hours of sleep, I was so hungry I'd wake up nauseous. I suppose it was hunger, but after stomach surgery, the normal hunger signals are not normal.

I kept a banana near the bed, and took a bite when I awoke, and it calmed my stomach. I had the DS, so while the banana had some carbs, it was fine for me. If you had RNY, you may want to try something with less sugar content so you don't risk dumping, like a bite of yogurt, or some nuts.

It's always good to run these things by your surgeon, even if just by phone, in case they need to rule out strictures or partial obstructions.
