What does dumping feel like?

Hi Sara,

I've had dumping before, but those symptoms do not sound like dumping to me but I'm not a doctor. When I get dumping it will usually happen after I have eaten something with a sugar content of more than 11 grams or something that had a lot of carbs in it. What I experience starts with extreme cold sweats. Like you would get if you had a fever while you were sleeping and woke up and the sheets were wet and you were freezing. Then I will start to feel like I am going to pass out. The room starts to spin, I start to get double vision and my mouth starts to water like I am going to throw up. Unless I throw up, it usually will last about 30 to 45 minutes for it to pass, however if I throw up, it doesn't last that long. It only took me about three episodes to learn what sugar level will trigger a dumping episode, but I never had pain from that. But like I said everyone is different.

That being said, those extreme pains that you are feeling (especially being 2 1/2 years out) could be from something else. You may have an obstruction or maybe scar tissue that may be developing. Also, I don't know if you had an open RNY or laparoscopic done but my doctor says that it can take at least a year for the nerves in that area heal which could explain why now you are getting pain. But either way, I would let my surgeon or my primary doctor know what's going on and they may want to run some tests to figure it out. At least a CAT scan just to be on the safe side. Especially since you can't take any Motrin/ANSAIDS for the pain and Tylenol does squat for me.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi Sara!

I to have been suffering from dumping syndrome. It's happen when I eat oatmeal with sweet n low. Twin hours later, while taking my daughter to school I start feeling lightheadness, nauseated, diaphoretic and feel like the room is spinning. If I'm driving, I must stop right away. It is so scary. I've gone to see the surgeon but ended up seeing his PA. He said he wasn't convinced is was dumping. But I disagree! He wants to see me back in 4 weeks. Prayers to lift you up!

I just had a episode similar to that this past weekend. I am only 2 and half weeks after surgery. I had strong pains in my stomach, sweating, and throwing up but I also was trying to let it pass. I am not sure if it was dumping or not but it was the worst pain ever. It lasted maybe hour and half. I felt better next day but only did liquids.

Talk to your doctor and get checked for ulcers. Dumping is an insulin response.

I had my rny 9 days ago and just had my first and I hope LAST episode of dumping. That was the worst thing I have ever experienced in my life!! At first I felt a little nauseated and then I started having intestinal cramping and went to the bathroom. After several minutes and the cramping continuing to get worse, I started having diarrhea and the nausea kept getting worse. Then I started sweating and started stripping off all my clothes and sweating, I mean seating like it was running off my body. The nausea and stomach cramps and the diarrhea continued off and on for about a half an hour and continued to increase in intensity. I noticed things started to turn black and I realized I was going to pass out so I sat up on the toilet instead of leaning over. Then I heard my roommate knock on the door to ask if I was ok. I had passed out and hit my head on the wall and they had heard it. That brought me back around and I noticed this nightmare had been going on about 40 minutes. My intestines started cramping again and I had diarrhea for another 10 minutes and then sat there for about another 10 until I had enough strength to walk back to my room. At that point, I crawled into bed and had a two hour very restless sleep where I could not get warm enough. About an hour after that I had to get up and had another bout of diarrhea but it finally seems like it has subsided. The only thing I did different this morning from every other morning since my surgery is instead of taking my vitamins with sips of Isopure, I was trying to get in a little more protein and sipped a Premier shake which I think was just too much and I might have chewed my vitamins a little faster than usual. I had read about dumping but nothing I have read ever sounded as severe as what I experienced this morning. It was truly awful and the first time I have questioned my decision to have this surgery. I had been doing so well and feeling really great.  Any comments, ideas, suggestions, experiences such as this, are greatly welcomed and appreciated.

I am 12 years post-op and still experience dumping.  I think it has been a good deterrent in that it can help keep me from eating the wrong things, as it feels so awful.  I really think that if I didn't experience it, I would have gained a lot of my weight back.  As of now, I have maintained pretty well, having gained about 15 lbs over my initial loss of 134 lbs.  It may sound terrible, but I am glad that I have it to help keep me more honest with my diet.

HI Patricia,

Thank you so much for your reply to my question about dumping.  I had an episode last night again, but not too bad.  I had my husband take my blood sugar and it was under 60.  I think it is dumping and not hypoglycemia.  I know that I craved a piece of candy and water so that is what my husband gave me.  This time it didn't last quite as long and after taking the Xanax the doctor gave me my terrible heart pounding subsided.  I will be three years out January 12th.  Other than those episodes once in awhile, I feel great and it is a pleasaure to go shopping in the skinny clothes now.  I didn't lose any hair....did you?  I know my skin is dry and I use dry skin cream like it is going out of style..  I didn't have to have any skin removed and the only place that bothers me is my upper arms so I just don't wear cap sleeves in the summer.

Thank you for your reply....it took me awhile to answer because I have been so busy.
Have a Merry Christmas.
