Taking Wellbutrin XL after gastric bypass
XL is the extended release form which doesn't work as well for post-ops. If I remember correctly, it doesn't break down correctly due to a lack of stomach acid. This is the form that is taken once a day. Probably the IM or immediate release form that is taken 3x per day would work best, but it does have some higher complications. I do fine with the SR which is a sustained released form that I take 2x/day. I do take a high dose, but it works well for me. My doc told me to take it w/ something acidic so I take it w/ juice or coffee.

I take the XL with great results! After surgery and reading what everyone has said on this board, I changed to the 3 a day ones, didn't work as good for me so back to the XL I went and have been fine! Everyone is different so you need to try the XL and see if they continue to work for you, if not, then consider changing.
Everyone here means well but let's face it, we aren't doctors and we all know that things work differently on each one of us. Just think, some do real well with certain foods after surgery and others can't even think about those same foods cause they get sick.
Good luck!
I am taking wellbutrin XL, 300 mg daily. with malabsorption I had to increase my dose. My psychiatrist was familiar with the needs of gastric bypass patients and is willing to adjust as needed. malabsorptoin does not mena no absrption, it means less absrption. You and your dr may need to play with the dosage to get it right, It takes about 3-4 weeks to kick in for everybody even with out surgery, so be patien, and persistant in getting adquate care.

Hi, I am 10 years out of ruin n y gastric bypass. I was subscribed Wellbutrin XL by a doctor with no experience with bypass patients. As bypass patients we are not to take any time released drugs ever. I did not know that the Welbutrun the Dr. Prescribed was time released. My pharmacist flagged the prescription because they knew I was a bypass patient and never to take extended time release. Be careful with this! The same Dr. Prescribed extended release cymbalta and I almost died because of a anaphylasis (sp)!
