Hi everyone, I don't know why my hubby thought of this, but he did. I was wondering if anyone knew if us gastric bypass patients can have the heimlich maneuver performed on us with all the re-routing that went on? Thanks, Lynn

I'm not a medical professional (far from it) but my initial thought is that the heimlich forces air from the diaphragm up into the esophagus (again, my anatomy may be all wrong) but I couldn't see why we shouldn't have it done to us. And anyway - I'd rather risk the heimlich than choking to death! lol I mean, CPR can break ribs, but I think people would choose a few broken ribs over being dead. No?

Yes we can Preferably after we're healed...

Yes. I even asked the surgeon about Martial Arts training, considering the probability of being kicked in the midsection. Not a problem once you're healed (a month or two after surgery)...

Funny thing I wondered this myself, because of the smaller stomach and whether or not there would be enough air content to squeeze the food up and out but worth wondering about! Brenda

i always thought the heimlich was when you needed to get food out of your airway..? this surgery doesn't touch anything going from your airway to your lungs.. i'm not a medical professional.. so i could be wrong?

The air comes from your lungs that maneuver forces the air from your lungs (via the diaphram) at high pressure through your trachea (windpipe) to dislodge some food or other thing that is stuck in your windpipe preventing you from breathing. The heimlich maneuver isn't for unsticking food from your esophagus (food pipe if you will). Kia 5'9" 284/158/155

Good question, I hadn't thought of that either.

If you were chocking, wouldn't you want someone to do absolutely everything they could to unblock the obstruction and save your life? Even if it meant doing some repairable damage to our rearranged plumbing? I sure would.
