I am new to this site, but, glad to see people owned by birds! I have a 3yr old umberlla ****atoo and a 20 yr old mullacan ****atoo. The umbrella is my baby. Very sweet and charming. He thinks he is human but does not talk. My mullacan was rescued. He is not as loveable. Although I can not hold him, he will let me give him a good scratch. He has came a long way in the 6 months he has owned me

Hi, Sherri. I can't answer your question, but I think it's great that your's has lived such a long life. I have a ****atiel named Pretty Boy - Don't know yet if he is actually a boy or not - I've had him for a year and a half now - he was a hand fed baby when I purchased him, and am still waiting for him to talk. I have heard that the females do not talk, so I'm still waiting to see what sex he is. I love birds of all kinds. Take Care, Donna Ford Highlands, Texas

i didn't know this board was here- anybody still out there? we, too, are owned by two birds- and a cat! the cat i got from the pound during a previous marriage and poor thing has been dragged all around with me --she's not much of a people cat and hides from my grandbaby. we have a blue and gold who is about 9 years old ; he has a wonderful vocab and will talk your ear off when he wants!he carries on onesided phone conversations!he is large for breed and absolutely gorgeous!!!!!!!! our other is a ruby-she is a cross between a scarlet macaw and a greenwing macaw..she is approx 6 years old and does talk tho not so much as chico. ruby overpreens and so her feathers are not as gorgeous as they should be! she loves my hubby ( her man!) and is learning to tolerate me after 3 years. hubby brought the birds to our relationship! he used to do bird rescue and so can tell stories! ( i mean hubby can!)

I also have a CAG. He is just over a year. I got him when he was 7 weks old and still being hand fed. He has just started talking and I am amazed at how fast his vocabulary is growing. I have noticed he is most likely to nip and bite if he is cranky. Especially if he has not gotten enough sleep. I am debating now on getting a ****atoo but I don't know if my husband will go for that idea.

Sherri, That's certainly an "elderly" ****atiel! I lost my 9+ year old tiel this past summer. I had an avian specialist perform a necropsy afterwards because we have two other parrots. Needed to be sure of why the tiel died in case it was contagious. His death was ultimately attributed to old age. Being older, his resistance was reduced and he had developed pneumonia. He picked up a bug some how and he was too old to fight it. She said that 9, almost 10, wasn't "ancient" for a tiel, but it was certainly considered "old". I've read that their life span is anywhere from 10 - 20 years with proper diet (not seed). But that the average is much lower because they tend to succumb to accidental deaths caused by other pets, children, ceiling fans, escapes, etc. Kind Regards.

My Tiel is only 5 years old---but I have done research and have found articles giving them a life expectancy of up to 27 years as long as they are healthy on on a good diet!

I have one Congo African Gray and he actually owns me. Leroy is 4yrs and I got him from someone else at the age of 7mos. He bit then and will now does it ever stop? I also do bird rescue. These birds at\fter I make sure with the vet they are healthy. homes where they are really wanted are found. If they are ill I work with the vet to get them as healthy as possible. I love birds of all kinds, but favor the big ones.
