No I don't think that the posts and blogs are enough to form a SOLID opinion. People tend to be multifaceted...perhaps you will pick up on some of their character traits but not necessarily all of them. I think you need to have real life interactions to see the true nature of a person and how they are living.  Once you have that personal connections...you can determine if your initial impressions rang true.  Anyone can be whomever they want to be in the cyber world....and some are better than others at camoplaging their true identity...if this were not the case there would not be so much SUCCESSFUL internet fraud, predators and the like.  I think everyone should keep their impression on reserve until they can have that reality check. For example, can you tell whether a person is a procrastinator, passive aggressive (i.e. can't tell a person to their face what they think), or dependable??? These things are best determined in one on one or group interactions.     

i have to differ on your statement about successful fraud/predators etc. just like irl, most of that kind of stuff occurs because ppl are STUPID...not because the con artists are so smart.

as for your point about being a procrastinator, dependable, etc...in most cases, if someone presents themself in a manner that is unappealing to another, there will never be a face to face meeting, thus rendering any other qualities they have moot.

i do agree that ppl are multifaceted...but most still give away a good deal about themselves if you watch closely.

I see your point....It can go both ways...very smart con artist or stupid people.  I know for a fact that some people are really fooled a lot on those online dating sites. I have read and know of a few horrible stories...and the people seemed to be prudent enough not necessarily stupid but trusting.

My point about the procratination etc.... was to say. if...you interact with someone online and all of your impressions of the person are good...you might not know until you met them face to face that they were huge procratinators or not dependable etc... etc......because you would not have had an opportunity to either observe these behaviors or put it to the test.

As for watching closely enough when online.... I don't know...just seems like too much effort.

Related, but OT.. I remember I was into online dating while in school (BP was the spot - and boy, did a sister learn better!!!).  My thing is, if a convo was held on IM, I could tell how they'd flow in person/over the phone.

I'm late getting to the post (as usual), but I tend to lurk on most of these internet boards before jumping in with both feet.  I tend to watch the interactions between people that seem to have a real life connection.  Dependent on how those interactions go, what they choose to share in their profile I get an idea of what I 'think' the person might be like.

Now I've only met a few people from BAF and interact via PMs with a few more.  Wonka D-love that girl, she's exactly how she comes across on the board, she decided we were gonna be friends and took  me under her wing even when I was trying to be a lurker and keep folks at arms length.  Trina you know I consider you my  with a  on your shoulder.  I can count on you to keep it real and not tell me what I might want to hear.  There are some folks on the board I don't bother responding to cuz they come across with a stank attitude-no harm, no foul.

I don't really consider making it a judgment on the people , just basing an opinion-and you know what they say about opinions...
