well the heavier a person is, the more stress any kind surgery puts on the body. They say every pound helps! I had my surgery canceled day off bc of insurance reasons. I had to go back to the nutiritionist and do 6 more months of nutrition supervised dieting....i ended up gaining like 30 more lbs and then my insurance said yes...i guess because I failed so miserably at the dieting. So the doctor says one thing, the insurance company does another. Just think of it this way. Theres no harm in getting your body started in the losing process before the surgery right?

Hey Beautiful,I did a liquid diet six days before surgery and I lost seven pounds.Good luck to you. They want you to do it so your liver wont be swollen when you have surgery.I wasn't gonna take any chances.Follow your doctors orders.

1. I had to do several six month diets. My insurance required it. Shows them that I tried every avenue.

2. Losing weight helps shrink your liver. This is a MUST if you're planning on having your RNY surgery done via LAP.

3. Some insurances want to see if you can stick to a program and lose. WLS is serious business and if you can't stay committed to losing on your own, losing it with the help of a tool can be disastrous.

My dr didn't require me to.. But I did lose about 40lbs before.. From what I hear it's to shrink your liver... Make it easier for them to get to your stomach... And you will have a better result all around (for the most part), kick start your loss..

Yes I did but there was no set amount.
I needed to reduce the weight of my liver for surgical purposes. I wanted to keep my liver...so I complied.

I also needed to show I was dedicated and had some self discipline.

The doctor will be monitoring you and caring for you after surgery. If you dont listen pre-op, you will not listen post-op. All surgical procedures require pre-op instructions and then, some maintenance, including pulling a wisdom tooth. After it is pulled, brush, floss, get regular cleanings  and dont walk around with stank breath.

You need to show the insurance company how badly you want it.

And mostly, you need to get yourself and your body in drive for what may be in store for you. You can have the surgery and NOT lose weight. Again, what are you willing to do?

My doc required that I lose 28 lbs prior to surgery....and a girl was mad at first.  I could have pulled a Raspusha from Norbit on the nurse for telling me that.

I quickly got over it though, cause it was a stone throw compared to what I hoped to lose with the help of the band.

Like others have said....they require the weightloss because it helps to  shrink the liver. Its also like a way of detoxing the body of all the toxins.

I drank plenty of fluids, sugar free/fat free this and that  and just worked out like crazy and lost the weight in NO time.

Good luck to you !

In life,  and especially on this journey there are sure to be days when you falter and give in.......just remember to never give up.
