DIET BEFORE SURGERY.. WHY ??

My Dr. didn't ask for me to diet however he asked for me to cut out all the bad stuff soda etc. He also wanted me to start drink the protein shakes ahead of time. I also had to do a two week liquid diet so of course I lost 10 lbs before surgery. I have notice that the dr. usually want you to lost weight before hand for a number of reason. Your life will change for good so to get you use to a new way of life and to look at food differently. Also for medical reason the dr. may want you to lose some weight also. This should be one of your questions for you dr. also.

you asked what is a liquid diet.....Yes is all liquids, water, protein shakes, SF jello, SF apple sauce, Crystal Lite, Broth etc. this is to clear your system. Pre op diet may also be needed for all the pre op test you will be taking. I had about 10 test my Dr. wanted for I was cleaned to go have surgery.  

Ok - since I JUST made a post about judging folk based off threads - I guess it would be inappropriate for me to go off - HOWEVER - I was asked this by a friend's sister and THAT girl went off on ME cause I told her it really DOES make sense to have to!  

Anyhoo - not sure how much you weigh now, but my doc told me I needed to in order to shrink my liver - it's enlarged in overweight folk and it's an organ they have to push out of the way to perform the RNY - you reduce your chances of complication if they have less to push. 

PLUS - you're gonna be on a diet AFTER surgery anyway - no time like the PRESENT to get your head in the game!  It's a way to show the doc you mean business and that you don't simply think surgery will do all the work for you.  You'd be surprised at the folk who think getting cut is all they need to do.
