So how do yall feel about ice-cream?

It depends.   Everybody is not the same.

I think that especially during the first couple of years post op you absolutely should not deviate from your surgeon's meal plan.

You should try to get healthy eating habits in place if you really want to have long term success maintaining your weight loss.

Ice cream is one of those foods that packs a BIG wallop of fat, sugar and calories.  It's also a slider food, meaning that you could potentially eat unlimited amounts of it and wind up blowing up.  If ice cream is a trigger food for you (meaning it's hard for you to stop once you start eating it) you should probably leave it alone.

Every surgeon has different nutritional protocols.  Mine has never said that there are foods that are forbidden for life.  When I go in for my checkups, she always asks how I am eating and I tell her the truth.   I eat a variety of food - mostly lean protein, and the rest consists of vegetables, fruit, whole grains and healthy fats.  BUT I do treat myself from time to time in reasonable amounts.  Back in the day I would eat almost a box of candy, but now I can be satisfied with eating one piece.  I can't say the same thing about chips with sour cream and onion dip though.  If I start eating them I have trouble stopping, so I avoid them.

For me, one of the keys to being successful long term is to make it convenient to eat healthy foods.  This is the food that I packed for my meals and snacks today:  boiled eggs, cinnamon spiced oatmeal w/ peanut butter and raisins stirred into it, black eyed peas with a spoonful of rice and a side dish of steamed purple cauliflower.  I have an apple in my desk drawer if I feel like eating something sweet.  I also have on hand some soy nuts, baked whole wheat Triscuits and garlic hummus if I feel like having something crunchy / salty.

Hello,

There is a great chance that you will not be able to tolerate ice cream.  Especially regular ice cream.  It is high in fat and sugar, which could cause you to dump.  Dumping is not a nice feeling at all. After that you will not want to look at ice cream.  Even as you get further out, ice cream may be a food you can't tolerate.  For me at almost 6 years I can only eat 2 to 3 spoons without a stomach ache.. Now, you will be able to eat sugar free popsicles.  My surgeon had those on the menu as foods allowed to eat early out.
