Hello everyone,
My surgery went well and I'm home for two days after having the bypass procedure. I am so depressed and find myself just crying because I'm having a hard time finding something to eat that I like. My doctor has given me the green light to move to phase II. I tried Farina and it was gross and almost made me bring it back up. Can I substitute Farina with oatmeal or grits? Please help me as i cry when typing this message. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

sorry you're having this issue - but didn't your doc or nut give you a full list of appropriate foods for each stage?
I had pages for each stage with lists of things that would work - but that was my surgeon - each one is different. We could tell you that grits or oatmeal was a green light - your surgeon might feel differently - and you always want to go with whoever CUT you - cause there's a zillion different opinions out there.
Call his office and bug the heck outta them until you get some answers that help you feel better and give you the knowledge you need.

I agree just about 100% with what MM said... I did clear liquids for 1 week and as I sit here and think about it I used to enjoy my diluted juicy juice and sf popsicles, etc, Definitely contact your surgeon because they should have had you prepared for the most helpless time of the journey. Best of luck and take it easy... It gets MUCH better.

Honey don't cry; it will be ok! Take a deep breath. Did your doctor give you a list of foods you can in phase 2 and did you go shopping?? I don't know what Farina is; but I am assuming cream of wheat?? You can have grits and oatmeal, but it has to be very thin. Do you have any sf popsicles? Those are a life saver. You can have sf jello, and broth. I hope this helps.

Thanks everyone for the quick response. My doctor and nutritionist provided me with the material needed for the different phases. I guess I'm a little depressed and also I find myself hungry. Is this normal? I'm starting to second guess my decision and ask myself why did I do this and is it worth it? My husband is very supportive and has been helping through this process. I swear, if it wasn't for him I would have lost it by now.
Yes, I did go shopping prior to surgery and the refrigerator and pantry is stocked with all kinds of broth, jello, pudding and of course the sf popsicles.
I guess I needed to reach out to my friend at OH for support because I was going through a little something and needed some words of encouragement.
Thanks again.

I totally understand about being overwhelmed and second guessing yourself. I did it too. I cried also. I stood with the refrigerator open and cried cause I couldn't eat anything in there. My dad would say girl just eat; he didn't understand that I was mourning food! It definitely takes so getting used to.

Hi Angela, If you were an emotional eater like I was then it definitely can be a little more challenging..trying to substitute for the deliciouse and greasy bad foods that were like hugs for the soul would depress anyone..but thats what got us in this mess to begin with right?? lol....but you have to retrain your way of thinking...you did this to be able to live a healthier and happier life! This phase will pass sooner than you think....I agree with everyone else...you have to go by the foods for each phase...my 1st 2wks I did the broth from chicken noodle soups, sf popsicles and moved on to the cream of chicken soups (which you will love). Don't be so hard on yourself for you knew that with this surgery came restrictions....so just take it one day at a time....start walking to help with the gas pains and when you go for your first week post op and see how much weight you've lost....i hope that will be enought incentive to do the darn thing!
You can do this!

Hi Angela,
I have not had surgery yet, but I just wanted to let you know that I'm here for ya too!!
I'm also taking notes for when my time comes. I hope that you are able to eat what is stocked up for you and enjoy those popsickles..Its getting hot they should be soothing!!

I agree with what everyone else says. But I also wanted to add that what you feel is very normal. I felt that way too right after surgery. I didn't like anything. I don't like grits, farina or anything else that was on my approved list. LOL. I like popsicles that was it and that's what I ate. So I feel your pain. I was having all kinds of cravings it was ridiculous. But now I am about a month out and the cravings are gone and I feel great. This too will pass. Just say that to yourself to get through this rough time.
