I mean if you really want to be honest..we won't be following anybody and drinking the kool-aid, but I think other things that black people are in alot of people think they are cults.  Certain religions, the masons, eastern stars, fraternities and sororities (not trying to be offensive, just speaking about things that I've heard, read or experienced).

Hey Nikki,

This is a good point...because back in the day...and unfortunately there are more recent examples...cult mentality did exist during the initiation processes of Greek Letter organizations. This is why there have been major reformations and implimentation of anti-hazing policies.  While...folks did not have to turn over all there worldly possessions...on a smaller scale...there were instances where folks were taken advantage of.

You struck a nerve with me on the Greek tip - I can't agree with you on that - I'm talking blind following and total isolation - Greek organizations are present and part of the community - doesn't fit the bill to me.

I don't just have issues, I have subscriptions!  I'm saving on the newsstand price.......

I am not in a sorority so I can only speak of what I have read or heard.  I think that any affiliate that keeps black folks out of trouble and does positive things in the community I wouldn't consider it a cult; so I was only commenting on your post.

Yeah...I was going by the true definition of cult in my first response.....but I think its going to very hard for folks to come up with real examples of cults for black folks as stated in my first response. Obviously I am not trying to say anything disparaging about Greek Letter organizations since I also belong to one. I don't consider them cults...but I do think that there was some cult mentality going on with the hazing....ie. mind washing....due to sleep deprivation, making folks wash someone elses clothes for fear of reprisal, giving up their personal property....making the person feel that Big Brother Almighty was the end all to be all.    I mean these things did happen...no sense denying it. Again ...this is why they implemented anti-hazing policies and a lot of Greeks organizations don't highlight this part of the history for obvious reasons.

Note to Self: I am not even going to trip on this thread. I voiced my opinion....I can see that folks are trying to get something started...but I am not biting this time....and Life is Like a Box of Chocolates! You never know what you are going to get! Some idiots do speak the truth!

Most of Jim Jones followers were black, which really suprised me.  It does seem to be true that black folk usually don't fall for the one leader that calls himself the messiah,  well, if you don't count Elijah Muhammed (nation of Islam minister, also called God incarnate).

I disagree with that one because Elijah Mohammed was referred to by his followers as a prophet to Islam and not God.

This is from wikipedia.

In 1932 a mentally unbalanced member of Fard's "voodoo cult" committed a highly publicized ritualized murder. Fard was initially arrested and then released by police on the condition that he leave Detroit. Fard headed to Chicago, where he started Temple No. 2. He turned over leadership of the growing Detroit group to Muhammad and the Allah Temple of Islam changed its name to Nation of Islam.[10] Muhammad and Fard continued to communicate until 1934, when Fard vanished and Muhammad was named 'Minister of Islam'. Following the final disappearance of Fard, Muhammad deified the temple's original leader, calling him an incarnation of God and predicting his eventual return to earth.[11][12]

My bad, it was the original leader of Islam that muhhamad was raising up as the incarnation of God
