Have your doctors discussed another option for treating the pain such as Tramadol (Ultram ER)?
Let me share a lil of my story with you...
I had a HORRIBLE car accident back in 1997 and my right foot was crushed by the engine of my car. Many surseries later, I'm left with a foot that is arthritic and fused bones in my entire mid-foot. I took Ibuprofen 800mg for the pain for years...then ended up with blood in my stool. So they switched me to VIcaprofen (small amoubt of Ibuprofen+vicoden). I did well on that for years...fast forward to WLS. That was my BIGGEST fear...managing the pain without meds after WLS. So, my primary doc put me on vicoden so I wouldn't have the NSAID. I did better after losing weight and exercising BUT I still have pain. The at a year post-op I developed an ulcer which further limited my medication options. In addition, after 3 years of taking the vicoden I was worried about the long-term effects of all that Tylenol on my kidneys so I requested an appt with my primary doc and ortho again. I did my own research and discussed the options with WLS doc, ortho, and primary and althought THEY were not as concerned as I was I cried and begged them to find an alternative. I knew I would have to take something to manage my pain for the rest of my life and was worried DAMMIT
Finally, my primary doc LISTENED to me and I agreed to try Ultram ER even though I was reluctent about the extended release because usually they don't work for WLS patients. HELL at the at point I was desperate and would have tried ANYTHING!!! Guess what...it does what I need it to do.
Now, it doesn't work like a narcotic so it doesn't give you the same "relief" but it takes the edge off just enough for me to be able to function. I know everyone is different but I thought I would share my experience with you to perhaps give you another option.
I also have many female issues (enometriosis and adenomyosis) and unfortunately the Ultram doesn't do anything for that type of pain so I have a narcotic to take for that but it's only 7-10 days out of the month instead of EVERYDAY!
Just be careful and don't give up! Listen to your body and trust it~
