Daddies & Daughters
So today my oldest daughter graduated from the 5th grade. The ceremony was great, her mother & grandmother cried.....it was your typical little kid graduation.
In the school lobby after school, everyone's doing the picture thing (see my avy). Well, in addition to all the other 5th grade girls pulling my daughter to come be in their pictures, there were a bunch of big headed 5th grade boys givin her the eye. How do I know they were giving her the eye? Because I was once a big headed 5th grade boy myself and I know how EYE got down.
So I guess the game has begun.......and its time to get my gun!! They comin after my baby.
How did y'all handle it when your daughters started gettin attention?

We have two daughters ages 17 and 20. I handled the dating issue well, but my husband had a verrrrrry difficult time. I will tell you what I repeatly tried to exclaim to him.... Female and Male attraction is a fact of life.
All you have to do is to continually teach your daughter well and act like you trust her. (keep your eye on the situation at all times). Lift her self esteem so high, that it would take a near perfect boy and eventually man to get her attention.
But go ahead and put the guns away-because this is life.
Here is my daughter:

Those nasty boys have been giving her the eye for a while now. I tell you. My husband is really crazy when it comes to her. He intimidates any male near her. If he has to meet you and shake your hand, he tries to break it.
One guy she called herself dating recently, her dad demanded his address, his license plate number, his whole name and the works before letting her go on a date with him. The guy told him he wasn't comfortable telling us where he lived. We told him that he knew where we lived, and we let him into our house. What's the difference? Well, needless to say, he went on about his business because he knew he was not going to get away with dogging our daughter. He was going to have to answer to daddy.

You just gotta teach em the rules..Cause whether we ready or not, they are so it's game on baby..keep ya head man and remember you were her first everything... and you'll see the fruit of your labor when you see the caliber of the first little dude who rings your bell.. in the meantime..keep the cognac close and the pistol closer

its natural for a parent to want to run interference (sp?)..... and you should....however just dont make it so she is scared to introduce her friends to you.
My 4 cents worth:
I agree that self-esteem is TOP PRIORITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Plus, if she sees how you treat your wife/her mamma/whatever, she will accept NOTHING less than a 'good' man who treats her like the princess she is! I tell my girls that "pretty is as pretty does' - actions go a long way in how other people treat you.
I thank God for my husband who is an EXCELLENT example of a MAN and a Father & a husband. Our actions speak louder than words and if your daughter's Mamma is a good woman, she can't help but follow in her steps!
As uncomfortable as some situations can be, we have tried our best to be point-blank-honest about boys, motives, education, sex, std's, babies, baby.mamma.drama, etc/etc. Lord have mercy....it never ends.
P.S.
What works for us is for my husband to stay on his toes and make sure all the little joker-big-headed-foos who step to our daughters know that we ARE in the mix and we CARE about their future - w/or w/out them. Unfortunately, there are wayyyyyyyyyyy too many parents who turn a blind eye to the little signs and before they know it, they're child is runnin buck-wild. Lord-have-mercy. Respect.
P.S.S. It does help that my husband is 6ft5, 320lbs.

Sam,
Brother I"m feeling you on this. I have been schooling my baby since she was about 9 on dating from a male p.o.v.
I understand that, eventually, she will start dating..but to respect herself. Rule number one: do not deal with ANYONE who doesn't treat her at LEAST as well as her daddy does. Period. Not negotiable
