The board is actually pretty jumping lol.

And just food for thought, all of us DSers are not created equally, there's freedom fighters from every surgery posting on other's boards (a few VSGers come on the DS board regularly starting mess) but we're not all like that......I'm one of the nice ones!!!

I'm with you.

The experiences of real people was far more important than anything a doctor or an internet article could ever tell me. I joined this site in 2003 and followed how things have changed.  Don't know how long I lurked before that.  In the 90's more pcp's were against wls than for it so who could I have relied on?

Every surgeon has a different protocol and there is so much that you will never see in your online research.  It took 9 years for me to decide that I could handle what other wls patients were going through.

I started out looking up the open Foubi Pouch as the gold standard of the time.  I waited for lap to become the standard.  I was waiting for outpatient to become the standard.  Next I knew my child was grown and had her own wls.   I realized maybe I'm waiting too long, lol.

^5 to you!  I have taken time to learn from vets myself - I see the pitfalls and challenges of others and try to plan accordingly.  It's all about what's best for YOU - and there's no one size that fits all

I don't just have issues, I have subscriptions!  I'm saving on the newsstand price.......

I hear you! There's a straight up psychotic DS woman that came in and slammed VSG on the VSG board out of the blue. I was still deciding between surgeries at the time and I hate to say it, but that pretty much cemented that I wouldn't go DS. Their whole board's "culture" is waaaaay the hell off. A sad thing to judge surgeries by, and I really shouldn't, but it sure as hell doesn't help their cause.

I think surgery choice is an entirely personal thing. To bash (not pro-vs-con, but bash) others' decisions is wrong.

Don't take this the wrong way but if one (online) person can change your mind about what surgery you would like to have, you might want to continue in your research of what would fit you best. I think the VSG is an excellent tool and I hope that you excel in your weight loss. I just wouldn't want you to let anybody persuade you in any direction.

Totally hear you there, but a good support system was also what I needed. I would be Mexican self-pay so essentially doing it all on my own. And notgonnalie, malabsorption in any surgery just kinda scared me.
I also eventually found out that I was on the borderline of acceptability for DS because my BMI wasn't high enough and I had no co-morbidities.

But safe to say, the woman and her friends that came in to attack that board like that really scared me with their ferociousness. I was just kind of learning about all of them.

Nonetheless, I have surgery in 7 days so I'm excited and decided. NERVOUS as hell, but excited nonetheless.

Gotcha, the DS is the big gun lol. Even though we had different surgeries we're still stomach sistahs, so count me in on your support system!!

Good luck on your surgery!

Do not let anyone rattle you.  Do your research and be confident in your choice.  I had a VSG and I'm happy.    People should pick what suits them and not what some stranger on the forums tells them that's right.  They don't know your lifestyle... what kind of insurance you have, how much access to medical care you have... how you are paying your bills or even your style of eating but they want to tell you what surgery to get.  Right....

There is no one perfect surgery because you have to be willing to work that particular tool.  Some sugeries are more expensive to maintain and people need to stop disregarding that on the forums.  Money shouldn't be an object but unfortunately it plays a major part in WLS decisions.
