i have a MAJOR phobia of going to the hospital.....i have one question.....how can you be an advocate in a hospital and you are drugged???? who do we put our trust in the medical staff? our family? God?.....tell me i really would like to know?....

You need to have someone with you whenever you go into the hospital.
You cannot be an effective advocate for yourself when you are impaired.
- Your advocate should be familiar with your medical history.  If possible, this person should accompany you to doctor's office visits so your doctor knows them.
- Pick a person who is assertive and not afraid to ask questions and put their foot down if they feel something is not being done properly.
- Your advocate can ask for information about the chain of command on your nursing unit.
- Your advocate has the right to ask for someone else to assess your condition if they are not satisfied with the judgement of the bedside nurse.

I am not sure what happened Lav,  but this certanly sounds like a case of more than a nurse trying to juggle too many pts without enough help.  And I don't suggest you have a family member there to necessrily ensure that the nursing staff does their jobs, but Drs make rounds at odd times of the days.  I once worked with an infectious disease dr that would round at 2 and 4 am.  Too many times pts have questions about their plan of care that only the Dr can answer and your family member and loved ones are the ones that are most likely to know what you as a pt would want.

I will keep you in my prayers as it sounds like you're dealing with some heavy stuff.  Wishing you all the best.
