Is the Surgeon General nominee too fat?

I just had this thought...I used to wear tight size 32s but I am going to raise an eyebrow when someone might be an 18.....*shaking my head*

Indoctrination is a cruel and ugly thing.

As we hear more and more about America's obesity pandemic, an overweight person may be just what we need.  A fat Surgeon General may get issues of obesity and its perceptions addressed in ways that someone who has always been trim cannot.

A fat Surgeon General may better inform the public that obesity is not simply lack of will power and poor character leading to glutinous over eating and lazy behavior.  It has a variety of causes: physical differences, psychological trauma, metabolic deficiencies,  behavioral practices, reactions to medication and environment etc.  Therefore, a variety of treatments are needed based on each individuals source of obesity.

No obesity treatment should be subject to a blanket exclusion clause by insurance companies when treatment is medically necessary.  That includes wls as well as psychiatric services.  I'll post this once again:  No one denies treatment to the underweight bulimic or anorexic.  The bulimic is a compulsive over eater just like many of the obese, yet they are respectfully given the physical and mental care they need, while the obese are despised and blamed for their condition.

A fat Surgeon General could be a good thing.  We've watched Oprah struggle for decades with fat issues although she has an army of people in her employ to help her manage her weight.  Knowing obesity is bad for you does nothing a far as treatment.  Perhaps this is the person who can get the truth out there.  Perhaps this is the one who will push for research on various causes and preventions and cures.  Maybe with a fat person looking after our health while facing the same health issues, obese patient visiting their pcp's  about their weight will be addressed in a methodical, medically sound and  rational manner as opposed to simply being told to eat less and exercise.  The source of obesity for many people is far more complex than calories in vs calories out.

Putting soapbox away now.

"Appalled, Indeed!" I don't know if You are a "poser" or you just hate what you were or still are. I don't know if you were ever obese in your life, but You are the Poster Child for what every overweight Professional Woman hates! It doesn't matter about the Content of Character, knowledge, skills, experience, philanthropy...all the right stuff. All that matters to you is that she may be overweight. Guess what, weight is NOT Immutable, as MOST of us in here can attest too. I am glad that we have a President that looks to all of the GOOD Stuff that a Person brings to the table and NOT the superficial. I can envision President Obama saying, "I have chosen YOU to be Surgeon General, YOU have all of the right stuff. You also know that one of the greatest health challenges we have in the USA is obesity...are you willing to tackle that head on by starting with the Woman in the Mirror; we need role models."

I might add, there are greater things happening in this Country than having a size 18 Surgeon General; NO one ever mentioned that C. Everett Koop was bit over-weight but then he is a man. I am constantly amazed at the superficial level of some Black Folks, to the point that "we" would even entertain discussing the topic at all. But them again, what are UNDERACHIEVERS or Racists or Sexist or Losers going to discuss, surely NOT something of substance.

What Black folks better start getting in gear for is the NEW NON-Affirmative Action policies that are being meated out by the Supreme Court. For certain positions it won't be enough that you can do your job well...you will have to take test and PASS them to get promotions. That crying about the test wasn't "fair" days ARE OVER or I'm from a low income neighborhood and our schools are bad - so give me a break on the SAT to get into college, Is OVER! The Supreme Court is saying "The Playing Field is NOW Level!" BTW, this will effect MAINLY Black Men.

If you are quite through blasting me, then please re-read my post and the subsequent ones...on better thought, don't!

Your opinion is your own and I respect it as such.  I will in no way address the insults you so callously threw in my direction but I will say God bless you and pray for you.
