Most surgens have you start at their seminars. If the surgeon's pratice is mostly wls, they will be skilled with presenting your history in a manner that will get you approved.
The process was relatively simple. An initial consultation, cardiac testing, psych and nutrition evaluation and history. I was not required to diet for 6 mo to a year as some insurance requires.
I chose to switch surgeons after approval, but all I had to do was gather my records and forward them. The new surgeon verified everything and got a second approval.
It will take dilligence and patience but as you have seen we're getting approved every day.
Research every existing procedure and know the pros and cons of each. You'll either confirm you want the band and only the band or consider other options. I was dead set against rny and it ended up the best choice for me.
Welcome to the BAF and good luck.
