Believe me you are not the 1st person to hear this.  Black people tell me I talk white and white people think I'm white till they meet me face to face.

It used to bother me, but I got the last laugh.  Its safe too say success has not followed them, and maybe with a  bit of education, and lack of 'hood that might not have been the case for them.

I was trying to think of an inoffensive way of getting my point across.

My parents raised me (right or wrong) that pink folks controlled the $ in this world and my ability to earn it, so I better do my best to be able to play in the same ball park with them, and if by just opening my mouth I sounded uneducated I could expect to not get anywhere.

I've heard crap like this all of my life & the fact that I'm in a interracial marriage only elicits more of these comments from the ignorant. The fact that one of my undergraduate majors was African American History would be lost on these fools.

I'm proud of my African American History but the fact is I find good in all people & I choose to live my life looking for my similarities with people rather than my differences with them. I don't like labels ( Unless is Gucci, Prada Chanel or Cavalli with a nice Choo Blahnik or Louboutin strappy sandal!)

Seriously these folks don't realize that by them trying to insult you they're really insulting themselves & the people they are suggesting you are trying to be better than. Saying that someone who speaks in an educated manner is speaking white is saying that black people aren't educated. That isn't true & it is insulting.

The bottom line is people who believe this are ignorant. This is one reason why I couldn't possibly care less about these folks or their opinions of me. I know who I am & don't have to prove anything to them..

"Saying that someone who speaks in an educated manner is speaking white is saying that black people aren't educated"

Thats what I am saying...people dont realize by saying things of this matter they are only buying into the stereotypes about our race and insulting not only themselves but our whole wonderful culture.

Aman to your whole post!

I know how that can be;
I surround myself with beautiful people on the inside; so many  people say stuff like, "Your sure have a lot of Asian, white , and Hispanic friends, and not enough black Friends."  But I smile and say I became friends with a person's heart first; not color!! People tend to think the same thing because of my education... but it's not just the education it's how my parents brought me up... to be more .. excel more... and meet above my abilities and I WILL NOT apologize for this...  I work for the government how would I sound saying stuff like "WUT-UP PEEP'S !!LOL!! SO if they think your STUCK-UP tell  them too let the door knob hit where the GOOD LORD Split-em. LOL.. Our society forgot that this is not BLACK, white, Asian, Hispanic but like our PRESIDENT STATED It's the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!.. WE all have free will to do, be, live how we want too..

Been there/done that more that I can count!!!

Like others here, I'm frequently told I 'talk white' and sadly, by our own folk, Hubby & I do "white folk stuff" like boating, camping, water & snow ski, travel, flight lessons, SCUBA dive, live in a mostly majority neighborhood, work in technology, and on & on.

My parents encouraged me to (and lived the example of)  "live life to its fullest and enjoy all that life has to offer by expanding your horizons".  If that constitutes acting white, then okay; but limiting myself from anything I wanted to do was never a consideration.

All we know is that we are not about to miss out on the fullness of life and the enjoyment that goes with it.  We like life like we have it & we worked hard together to get it.  Why should any of that be reserved for someone else?

We encourage and share in the fun with our Godkids so they get the idea that everything is truly out there for them if they are willing to put in the effort to make it happen.

Hubby says 'until someone makes a mortgage payment here, their opinion doesn't count'.
