Scared of Losing too much. Please Help
I've had the exact same concerns you have with losing too much weight, as well as changing my mind about the band.
I'm 5'4 and 250 and I'd like to end up somewhere around 130. I have curves and I don't want to lose them. My husband loves my curves, even at this size, so I've worried about that too.
As far as the band, I had initially decided that was what I wanted, until I did some more research and and (like you said) learned more about myself. I LMAO when you said you need "a drill sergeant in your stomach." LOL I do too!!
My problem is not really overeating at meals it is eating sweets. That's my main problem and when I realized that the band does not control that, it concerned me.
Also, at every orientation I went to, I was told I could expect to lose 50-60% of my weight. Well, I've done that on my own (lost 105 lbs a few years ago, regained 75 lbs). Now, I've been on the boards a lot and I see there are MANY, MANY successful banders who have reached their goal, but it would be just my luck I wouldn't be one of them.
I know the weight is not going to magically disappear. I am ready, willing and looking forward to working my butt off. I just want to make doubly sure that all this work is actually going to pay off this time around.
So I won't say don't worry about losing too much, because I'm concerned about that too. Just focus on getting your nutrition and eating the right things after you have your surgery and you'll be fine. My mom had RNY over 5 years ago and she's still battling with the last 10-15 lbs. So I agree with the person who said this is more the norm than being underweight. Hang in there and good luck!!

I understand your fear! I started at 247 and on surgery day was 233. I am 10 months out tomorrow and I weigh 136. I just started to get a little worried, but I also realize that I have been working out 4 days a week since January without fail. I just need to slow down to 3 days and not be so aggressive. Your body will do what is right for it as long as you follow all your guidelines. It will be alright, just trust your body!

If that worries you why don't you look into the lap band or sleeve, they tend to be better for lower BMI's since we CAN control our weight loss to a degree... I would think RNY is a more drastic surgery if you have a LOT of weight to lose, I would fear malnutrition also if I did not have that much weight to lose and could lose too much. But it seems as though you have made your choice -- I am sure there have been many who were lower BMIs and did fine with the gastric bypass, I think the most important thing is to make sure you follow your surgeons guidelines and vitamin regime, good luck
thank u so very much...initially i was interested in a band due to my fear of malnutrion etc...but i realized that u have to be dedicated to a healthier way of life regardless what route u choose...my bestfriend had a bypass and doesnt want me to do it...but everyone's struggle is their own. her not being able to come down to 180 from 366..... isnt more of a struggle than me being 243 wanting to be 150...u cant gauge someones pain or difficulties u know. but shes doing well and i hope i will also :-)

Hi Cocoa. I wish you well with your journey. I live in the Bronx as well. I was curious......where are you having your surgery done and who is your doc if i may ask? I am still pre op and have recently started my 6 month journey with Montefiore hospital and Dr Vemulapalli.
